My problem with Lampard (at the moment)

I think the issue is you have a PE teacher leading your team.

Why is he the manager of Chelsea football club anyway?

What did he achieve to ge the job of a champions league club who have won lots of trophies in recent years?

Keeper didn't save a single penalty, that doesn't bode well for how imposing he is.

Lampard needs time to get them to gel but it's so disjointed, they were a better team and 200m richer last year.

Not exactly fair. He was quite dominant actually. I'm not gonna go OTT and say he's a brilliant keeper, but he actually made some saves!

Martinez didn’t save a penalty in the community shield and you said he would be signing if the Summer

I thought it provided balance to your praise tbh.

He looked assured in the game and not very imposing in the penalties. I think that is a fair reflection.

I can understand after watching Kepa how that might have felt better than it was.

Keepers saving pens has become a lot harder now. They have to stay on the line unlike previously when they could steal a yard or two. Dudek in 2005 was practically on the 6 yard box.

That's why in recent pen shootouts keepers have not looked like making a save.

Kepa would be letting Reguilon's shot in so if we are happy about Mendy thats the main reason

Hmm. We need more evidence (obviously) but he gives off a meh vibe to me. Which for the money we paid, and after Kepa, is fine.

I'd have felt a lot better about him last night if he was 100% aerially dominant, but he just had to have that one flappy moment in the second half to ensure my jury's still out.

I think the reality is that we have to stop leaving our centre backs isolated, and split. There's a 'kin huge hole in the centre of defence.

Most strikers have an area of the pitch they preferentially prefer to drift to, doesn’t make them wingers. His 5 seasons at Leipzig, the majority of his senior career, have been played as part of a strike partnership. Other than some games for Germany where he started as a winger and didn’t do well, it feels like Werner as a winger comes from a very video game mentality that he’s small and fast so will work as a winger.

He likes the left hand channel, not necessarily the same as being a good LW.

Liverpool would've been a special case because Mane/Salah play so narrow they practically live in the channels (particularly Salah). Werner playing LW for Liverpool probably works, but it's specifically because of the team's shape.

What was strange last night was seeing him playing RW after CHO swapped to the left. It looked very odd.

Werner’s tendency to keep pulling out to the left could cause problems, to be fair. Especially if using attacking wing backs. You need the striker to be occupying the middle of the box. I think Chelsea could have problems getting the balance of their attack right. Many of the seem to like to occupy the same areas.

Werner is a centre forward, not a winger. Mount can play anywhere so I have no problem with him. And Havertz is a 10. Lampard must decide which of the three is his most important player and make the team play for and around him. No square pegs in round holes.

___

I wouldn't say Mount can play anywhere. He's best as a somewhat attacking CM, a number 8.

But Havertz is a 10. I'm not convinced we can get the best out of him by trying to get him to play a different role, even though the number 10 role is becoming increasingly rare in modern football.

So already it means we can't fit both of them in the team at the same time in their best positions. Makes you question the planning that went into the transfer.

Also, Werner is playing on the left only until Pulisic and Ziyech return, because we don't have other backup wingers. He'll play up front once we have our best players available there.

Werner playing as a lone striker was always the question mark.

That’s true as well. If we really wanna get the best out of him we should play two strikers. But that restricts formations for Havertz to play in, unless Havertz almost plays upfront himself as well.

Basically it sounds like our approach to signings was pick some talented players in Europe and then worry about finding a way to fit them in later.

The signings themselves have said though that part of the reason for joining was personally speaking to Lampard and him talking about how they would fit in to the setup. Maybe this vision he pitched was based on having Pulisic and Ziyech available, which affects the role the other attackers will play.

posted on 30/9/20

Havertz played up front quite a lot for Leverkusen didn’t he? Though from what I’ve read the issue with that is that he would often drop off and out to the right, which wouldn’t give you a focal point in the middle.

Sometimes yeah. But not necessarily the same type of striker Werner was used to at RB.

Werner’s just gonna need to adapt.

Werner played with Poulsen or Schick at Leipzig who could hold the ball up and link with him. He started from the left and made runs in the channels.
