Local councils are now voting to step in and provide free school meals themselves.

As a teacher in a highly disadvantaged area (60% of the students I teach are on FSM) this is so important!

If you can lads, donate to a foodbank please it really is vital.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Why haven’t they done this before if they can do it now?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They can't really afford it, they are only talking about providing it next week but think they are trying to shame the govt into a long term strategy.

Christmas will be the real pinch point for the kids/families
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I thought that. Trouble is that if it’s a stunt (please take that the right way) to try and embarrass the government into just handing over more funds I just can’t see it happening.

In the grand scheme of things it’s minimal as was sorting the homeless issue during the first pandemic hit. That seems to have also fallen by the wayside.

Shame really as both these concerns were essentially a “gift” to Westminster which if they’d acted on and continued as policy would have given them universal acclaim.

Maybe I’m simple and don’t fully understand the repercussions but they both seem easy, popular and reasonable inexpensive policies to implement.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm certainly no expert on it but I think they see it as a policy popular with mostly a socialist base of voters...

Obviously, this is not who the traditional conservative supporters are.

However, i think they have really underestimated the feeling of voters across the country from a variety of spectrums.

IMHO you have got to be a pretty special type of low life when you see what some of our money has been spent on recently and not see this as a vital and important use of money!

Our local supermarkets always had overflowing boxes and bins of product people donated.

They’ve been sealed off in case of infection. Our world has gone stark raving bonkers

Tell me about it.Always my first port of call
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s scandalous mate.

And yet again to be a bore

Why the fwck isn’t anyone in any government standing up and showing us all the real damage and the numbers they have so much concern about being compared to the norm at this time of year?

The simple answer being they’ve all placed their political futures on the current stance and can’t now back down.

Italy had the harshest shut down in Europe and look what’s happening now despite their renewed efforts. It’s a virus ffs.

I’m a Tory voter. Mostly have been all my life as are many of my friends and colleagues albeit most aren’t.

We all agree on this. It’s an absolute no brainer and hate to say it, but a vote catcher.

Its great to hear that there is agreement from both parties voters.

I am truly disgusted by this govt and find it hard to hide that.

It's hard to believe they have said no to this given what has been spent elsewhere.

As for the council's doing this off their own back the harsh reality is it will mean cutting something else but they rightly have seen hungry children as a higher priority

Don’t worry. I’m used to it on here and in general life.

I genuinely despair at many of the antics of this government. What appear to be simple choices are bizarrely ignored or fought against which makes it even worse when they need the public onside at this time more than ever.

Atrocious in so many ways.

If just by sheer necessity, they can’t continue with these lockdowns and accept millions being thrown out of work.

Something has to give

I think we have to just accept that most of us are going to get it. Let those at most risk continue to isolate until we have a vaccine and carry on working. Probably easy to say with hindsight, but all the money that we have pumped in furlough should have instead been spent on the NHS to ensure that we had the infrastructure to better manage the pandemic.

I only hope that Marcus will get major media exposure to shame these so called MP’s into doing the right thing. They had no problem spending a reported £12bn on a World Beating shambles of a track and trace system so why not support the poor in society. Oh wait, there isn’t an election on the horizon and the Tories duped England’s masses into believing they would level up. They are treading them underfoot.

So glad we have all these social justice warriors in Scotland.
They'd NEVER vote for a party who would do anything like what the Torys have done.
