UK society doesn't reward laziness. Most people know that if you are lazy ie, you don't do or learn anything and try very hard to achieve with what you do know, you don't get anything in life, except the basics that welfare provides. Which is a basic survival on a means test.
We have to encourage these individuals not to accept the very least, which is nothing basically, against what you can achieve. Which can be massive.
What we also have to avoid is not rewarding people who do work hard every day with a wage that doesn't come near to pay the bills. It defeats the object of these people on lower pay, trying. Thats not lazy, it's actually smart.
This should be the ambition of all democratic Governments.

In work poverty is a big issue. Families who work but outgoings are greater than incomings, net result people go hungry. They are paying the price for surviving honestly by working.
Record numbers are relying on food banks to feed their families, that's people from all walks of life during these difficult times but sadly it's the kids from working class, low income backgrounds that are hit hardest. Families who rely on hand outs from the state.
In excess of 3m kids live in poverty in the UK. 3m, in 21st Century Britain, let that sink in. We don't see this poverty like we do in 3rd world countries because it's all hidden away in social housing. But what baffles me is why do we have poverty in a country that is supported by the state like no other?
Austerity could be a big reason, benefits have been cut severely, affecting people more in economically depressed regions of England, mostly the north. People living beyond their means is another big factor, they are literally surviving hand to mouth.

This. The UK is one of the world's richest but also most unequal countries. In a country with democratic systems this can only be sustained by ensuring myths prevail that suggest the poor deserve their fate and that we're running out of resources due to grasping people who we shouldn't sympathise with.
About three quarters of the kids who qualify for free school meals have parents in in-work poverty. But go on Tory MP Twitter accounts (let alone their surrogates) and you'll see a world of vicious fantasies where feeding kids is counterproductive because it will free up parents' money to spend on crack dens.
A serious number of people have been convinced that scroungers and refugees are the fundamental problems facing our country. That's why we have the scandal of wealthy corporations paying workers less than enough to live on and then limited tax on their massive profits, and friends of the government with no expertise getting fat contracts to botch out essential services. I was thinking, perhaps they would agree to give food to hungry children if we said we're okay for them to outsource the job to one of their rich supporters. Meet them in the middle.

What a complete mischaracterisation of the opposing view RR. Some extreme idiots might think that way but you’re making out that serious numbers of people think that way.
Ultimately this country provides a lot and in terms of family allowance it provides £21.50 a week for the first child. £93 a month is enough to feed a child, if people are sensible with their finances and do what they can to save and work, they will then prosper in this country.
Of course some peoples’ circumstances changes, job loss, health etc but prudent financial planning plus the government support that is in place will see the children with food on the table.

The crack den thing is a direct quote from a Tory MP who this week claimed that free school meals would lead to support being squandered by feckless parents. We know that most people are decent and respond decently to campaigns like Rashford's. But there's such consistent misinformation about 'scrounging' that the average Brit grossly overestimates the amount of benefit fraud, overestimates the numbers of refugees and overestimates the relative generosity of this country to the vulnerable. That's the only way we have a situation where in a democratic country with overwhelmingly decent and generous people we have some of the worst levels of relative poverty and the misery of in-work poverty in the whole of the developed world.
