Would normally say field a few fringe players but we can't afford that luxury. Full strength and get some confidence going.

I would say go back to a back 3 but it seems Nuno is hell bent on sticking with a back 4 so I guess that's the way he'll go.

A back 3 of Boly, Saiss and Kilman for this one. Keep Silva in the starting line up too, as his confidence was enhanced by his performance against WBA.

Or completely shatter it.

Also, if we need to play 5 at the back against Chorley then I'd suggest we are in a lot more trouble than even the biggest panicked are suggesting.

Yeah, whatever system he goes with has to be the one he is going forward with the rest of the season. I am happy with either one given our current state.

Agree that Silva should start again after getting a little bump in confidence. Could we play both he and Cutrone together? Would there be any point in that?

Against Chorley we should in reality be able to play a back four and just one holding midfielder, one more advanced and two wide and two forward but of course we wouldn't do that in the league so i guess no real point doing it now.

I can't see a lot changing until we invest in central defender and midfielder, regardless of what system we play. I think we will limp to the end of the season now and then we'll have the worry about our better players like Neto and Neves becoming unsettled by us going backwards.

Underestimating Chorley could prove fatal. They have absolutely nothing to lose and will throw the kitchen sink at us. They might be 111 places below us but to get to this game they beat Derby County 2-0 on the same ground and Derby are only 29 places below us.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

They beat Derby County youth team. Derby had a Covid outbreak so the first squad were isolating.

Watching the 'pool v man u game and just gobsmacked by the number of red shirts that get into Man U's box when Liverpool are attacking. Lessons to be learned here Nuno!!

After a string of defeats and a slip down the table this has to be seen as a chance to get back on track. But in many ways it’s a banana skin that’s fell in our path at the wrong time really

For anyone that was following the club in the 80s there was always a weary eye on Chorley making progress in the cup. Would it be a chance for revenge or a repeat of a nightmare if we were drawn against them. They have already beaten three league teams to get this far so they are clearly not mugs and we will need to do a professional job to put them away.

In 1986 the most scary thing was that there was a reasonable argument to say they had a better team than us. Certainly not the case now, but I still feel nervy about it

They would be playing a few of them if I picked the team

Ruddy
Boly, Coady, Kilman
Semedo, Otasowie, Dendoncker, Ait-Nouri
Vitinha
Silva, Cutrone

6 of those have full international caps and all are in our first team squad. Hardly the equivalent of the Derby game. For it to be equivalent, all of those players would be self isolating and we would play our u23s and u19s that don't train with the first team.

Not concerned in the slightest by Chorley. We will win and win comfortably.

And if we did that the majority would have youth caps. I'm not apologising for the fact that we have a far superior squad than Chorley but the point I'm making is that Corley won't have any 18 or 19 year old players and regardless of the level they play at their older players have a wealth of experience and should not be underestimated.

posted on 17/1/21

I'm sure they will. We still shouldn't have to play a back 5 against them to be defensively solid. It would be a major concern if we did think that, as we are saying our centre backs aren't good enough for non-league football.

Nor is the Derby game comparable to ours as Derby's entire first team squad was unavailable due to Covid. All of our first team 18or 19 years olds would walk into their first team. Those were the points I was trying to make.

Not sure that’s the kind of team I would go with gem. I’d certainly play Neto and Traore who would surely scare the life out of non league defenders

I guess it depends on whether you see a back 3 or a back 5.
In your opinion a back 3 means 5 defenders, or a back 5 as you describe it.
For me, a back 3 is 3 defenders with 2 attacking wingers who help out in defence by tracking back and assist the defenders when required.
This is why I see a back 3 as being just as attacking as a back 4. It all depends on the players you have and how you utilise them.

I'm thinking give them both a rest and no risk of injury so they can come back fit and strong against Chelsea. Same for Neves.

I do think there is a real chance of one or two of our players getting injuries during this game.

It's not just the wingbacks. As it leads to us only having two in midfield, they are usually outnumbered and can't press. They have to maintain shape and defend the space. This generally ends up with us having 7 defensive players shuffling across the 18 yard line without the ball.

Our forwards also become isolated as our midfield can't support from a deep position. Our defenders tend to stay deep and we struggle to maintain pressure.

One thing that is noticeable when you watch Wolves compared to some of the better Premier League sides is that when we attack in the opposition half, if the opposition clears we rarely win the second ball or press to win it back quickly. We just accept the opposition has possession and retreat. Other teams have their midfielders the outside of the area and centre backs pushed up to maintain pressure and win those balls. It's the same when we clear the ball ourselves, we rarely have anyone to win those second balls as everyone is so deep.

This is always a problem with the 343 the way we play it.
