The quality in the squad (players like pogba, Fernandes, DvdB, Fred, Maguire, Shaw, Matic and Cavani) cannot be expected to carry the ordinary and woeful for an entire season.

They need to step up or OGS needs to consolidate with better - or more adequate - players around them.

Ole's pressers aren't funny like LvG's, or surly like Jose's.
But they are sensible.

There are times when he tries something that simply isn't there or has no real prospect of working.
--------------------
But in his head, it had the prospect of working. If he is overthinking rather than playing on instinct, then the magic of his game will diminish.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think that's necessarily true at all. That couple of % that he *might* lose from his game, would surely be offset by the benefit to the team's play overall.

Take the example I gave in the Liverpool match. The whole team benefits from him controlling the ball, holding it up and allowing his team mates to join the counter. He might not get the assist that he would from playing the first time pass, but that doesn't mean the doesn't go on to score a goal or make a chance.

Kevin De Bruyne gives the ball away sometimes trying difficult stuff, but rarely gives the ball away cheaply and his decision making is generally excellent (as is his execution). He'd probably pick up a few extra assists a season if he tried playing the killer passes as much as Bruno does, but his team would be worse off for it as he'd break down passing moves, set the opposition on the counter, not allow his team to get out of pressure situations etc more than he ended up getting an assist... Point being, it's a balancing act, at Bruno has a habit of getting the balance wrong.

By all accounts he's more controlled for Portugal (but with lesser output in terms of goals & assists). So it seems he is capable of playing a different style, and I'd argue is talented and intelligent enough to make small adjustments that improve him as a player and us as a team.

More from Ole:

Lindelof has been outstanding for us this season. Yes Eric did well when he came in, but he has a job on his hands to displace the best centre back in the world.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wonder what Winston makes of that claim.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Absolutely ridiculous.

I mean, what is Ole smoking?

He's making himself sounds silly with these sorts of statements.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it's to wind you up Winston
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This appears to be the second week on the bounce that Winston's taken the bait on press conference thread.

Berba, it’s an issue with the whole team really. So many of them play off the cuff. And it’s evidently encouraged by the coaching stuff. But it’s why we so many of the players, and the team as a result, go from shiiiiit to sublime throughout a game.

Rewind 6 months and all the tears were about Pogba, Rashy etc holding the ball up and slowing down play

"he’s always on the verge of creating something when he loses the ball and that’s what he’s been told to do, I want him to play the passes he sees."
-------------------------
This is very important. There is a small undercurrent on here ready to have a dig at fernandes, but those folk need to remember what things were like before Fernandes arrived... Desperate for players who would take risks and try to make things happen.

It's not always gonna happen, but this sudden clamour for him to play simple passes is hindsight at it's finest.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been critical of Bruno's over tendency to force things that simply aren't on. It's not about playing simple passes versus playing difficult ones, but playing the right pass more consistently than choosing the wrong one.

There are times when he tries something that simply isn't there or has no real prospect of working. An example at the weekend was when a ball got played out to him on the left in the first half. We were under a lot of pressure at the moment in the game and really needed to get on the ball and relieve some pressure. The ball was switched out to him and rather than bring it down, hold it and allow the team to get up the pitch a bit, he tried an outrageous first time half-volley over the top pass for Rashford that he mishit and ballooned it up into the air back into the middle of the pitch, putting us back under pressure again.

I understand Ole wants him to take risks - I do too - but taking risks doesn't mean trying to do the sublime every single time. There are times when he just has to be a bit more savvy and controlled. He'll be a better player for it and we'll be a better team overall.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It was really bizarre that and comedy at the same time. Like someone said earlier on, he has done enough to avoid criticism somewhat. But he has to improve his passing big time. During his days at Portugal, it was never great too. There is taking risks and just being a bang average passer of the ball, which is Bruno in recent times

Pogba and Rashford’s ball retention has always been an issue.

I agree with ji! If we make Bruno think too much and coach his natural instinct out of him, he will be half as productive as best. Do people wanna see the Lingard Perriera days. No thanks. Since Bruno has come we have been much better and actually can compete.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No one is disputing the fact he has improved us massively, and the catalyst to most of our recent success. We are also not a small club and should demand excellence. At the highest level or if we faced Liverpool of last year, some of the balls he gave away on Sunday was criminal

Does anyone know what Jones's injury actually is. He must have been out for 7-8 months now?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Realistically, if Phil Jones hadn't have been injured, we'd easily have a 10-point cushion over the rest of the league. His lack of fitness has cost us more than we'll ever know. A massive loss for our club - I don't know how Ole copes with this. Shows his true character as a manager. If only, Phil.....

Why do fans feel the need to be hyper critical so much of the time? We're just hitting the best spot we've been in for 8 years and it shifts immediately into Bruno being a "bang average passer of the ball". He's had one of the most ridiculous impacts you'll see a signing have and it's still not enough. We've gone from floundering around in 6th with Lingard and Pereira starting in our midfield to asserting ourselves as one of the top few teams in the league.

Some people are just never happy or even content. Moan about this in 12 months if we've stayed stale but as it is, we're progressing forward. It was always going to be a 'project'.

People like to just sit in their armchairs and pick, pick and pick. I imagine these types will only ever be consistently content with a team that wins 37 league games a season.

Yes, people make mistakes, they lose the ball, they make poor judgement calls. That's just being a human being and the absolute very, very best players in history are also guilty of this. Part of why football is a great sport to watch is its fast, intense, physical and people have to make countless decisions in 90 minutes with seconds, if that, to cosbdier them. The mistakes make it exciting and they show us that we're watching a sport played by people, not robots.

I have no idea what team or players you've been watching that game after game there's just always fault to pick. What are your expectations?

Yes, there were some bad instances of decisions or playing balls that didn't come off. Yes, in hindsight we could have done things differently but if you're not enjoying where we're at right now, what on earth do you get from watching football?

I'm not saying don't criticise at all, obviously that's part of the fun, the debate after the game etc but it's the tone people do it in. With this sort of air of arrogance about yourself that reduces a really difficult game to play at this level to seem so basic and simple.

Bruno seems to very much be following instructions. Play it forward fast and in behind at almost any opportunity. That's fine, we can't play every game like fans want us to because there's so much riding on every single result. It's easy to sit on a forum and act like an expert but even small decisions can have lasting ramifications and I think Ole got it all pretty much bang on. Instead of whinging and not picking why isn't there any kind of unity or harmony at all? Why does it have to be so toxic and argumentative?

I've seen 'trashford' making rounds again and it's awful.

Say what you will about the money in the game, VAR etc but it's honestly the fans that spoil football the most for me. It's just whinge, whinge, moan, moan, insult, insult. A new type of toxicity that spreads around and sucks the life and soul out of the game.

Rojo has spent months on the sidelines as well. We have sorely missed the Jones-Rojo axis in our backline. United have a permanent injury crisis at CB.

I am pretty surprised about his comments about Diallo but Ole knows better than any of us. I’d have thought someone so young coming to a new country/league/language mid season would need time to settle especially when you look at VDB and we seem to be fighting for the title but if he’s nearly ready then fantastic. If he does play and doesn’t perform particularly well I wouldn’t be too concerned, every player should be afforded time.

posted on 19/1/21

I’d take a Nani, Valencia or even Mkhitaryan right now. Hell, Dan James plays for us, give me an Obertan.

posted on 19/1/21

Diallo is very young though and could just play on instinct, coming on late and being asked to get at them. Less discipline needed if he’s attacking. Similar to Januzaj initial impact but in a better side we have now. Few sub appearances won’t hurt at all.

Not sure if it is because it's a bit off piste, but I like that team a lot.

Maybe Rashford and Martial share a tweet that contravenes the many Prem/FA rules and get banned for 3 games?
