And of course we made some horrendous mistakes.

Some of them because we just didn't know but some which flew in the face of scientific basis.

The league table of the tragic vivid deaths sadly shows how counties have ‘performed’ in managing this pandemic. U.K. with all its science etc is one of the worst
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I always wonder at this periodic "count" to measure perceived success or failure when we are nowhere near the end of this battle.

It's fair to say nobody knew what they were dealing with and certainly not the scale of it.

Many "experts" predicted ludicrous scenarios on both sides of the spectrum; very few of which were even close to being correct.

We are still learning.

But somebody wants to produce a table
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Also with so many different approaches some will have delayed waves or peaks, or experience them earlier.

We won't know until it's over. That said we had the benefit of being hit later and should have learned from others mistakes rather than repeating them.

I can't believe this argument is coming up again

Nobody is happy with lockdown.

This one feels necessary to many because of the myriad of feck ups that have happened since January 2020.

We're now committed to a continuous cycle of lockdown and release until we get this vaccine in enough people.

Shutting the borders should have been done in March and, if it was, then we wouldn't be in this mess. But ultimately that doesn't matter now because the damage has been done.

Necessary yet not slowing down infection rates as things stand?

Shutting the borders in March would make no difference now unless you think we should have shut them and just kept them shut to everyone.

And how does that explain the Kent variant which is now the dominant strain by far?

I can't say I'm paying as close attention to the numbers as I was a few weeks ago, but infection rates in Aberdeen have dropped by a third today and I believe we're seeing a downward trend across Scotland?

There was a good piece in the Spectator last week about why lockdown sceptics should support this lockdown. Written by someone who was scathing of previous lockdowns. I think the gist of the argument was that this one has a purpose - to put poison into people's veins.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's exactly what we should have done.

We had a choice - get to a point where we could live life relatively normally (bars, pubs, restaurants, gigs) but not have travel outside the country, or have repeated severe lockdowns and get our holidays in August. We chose the latter and we're paying for that now.

the Kent variant was allowed because of the spread of the disease if we controlled this better it may not have ever existed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Eh?

On what "science" is that based?

yet another quantum leap of faith.

Not a chance that would happen

That's what's happened in countless countries and they have been far less impacted by the virus than we have - they just had to accept they werent getting on their holidays (and if they did then they had to pay to quarantine in a hotel for two weeks on their return).

It's exactly what we should have done.

Indeed but paralysed by indecision we have been stuck with half measures. Those half measures have almost always been 2-4 weeks after they were recommended significantly reducing their effects.

All the pain none of the gain.

Evolution
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Viruses mutate. It's their job.

Are you saying closing our borders would have likly stopped the one in this country from mutating? I believe it's called the Kent or English variant for a reason.

It started here in the UK.

Baws

Go and compile a new table with heed.

You simply don't know that nor where this will end up and who "wins" or who "Loses".
