Shutting the borders in March would make no difference now unless you think we should have shut them and just kept them shut to everyone.

And how does that explain the Kent variant which is now the dominant strain by far?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
the Kent variant was allowed because of the spread of the disease if we controlled this better it may not have ever existed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Eh?

On what "science" is that based?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Evolution
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Viruses mutate. It's their job.

Are you saying closing our borders would have likly stopped the one in this country from mutating? I believe it's called the Kent or English variant for a reason.

It started here in the UK.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't believe that's been confirmed has it?

It spread in Kent, but could have originated elsewhere.

The more cases you have the more chances a virus can mutate.

two arguments here (I don't know enough about it to know which, if any, are accurate).

Firstly I think it was recognised that much of the infections in late summer/early autumn were due to travel, with the mutations from Spain becoming common place in the UK.

Secondly, if I understand it correctly, mutations are far more likely in populations where the virus is allowed to spread relatively unchecked. That's why some of the more transmissable (sp?) strains have come from the UK and Brazil, where infection rates have been high.

If we want to go down that road then I suppose the SA variant and the Brazilian variant, the Chinese variant or indeed any other variant could have originated in the UK as well.

Here's an idea. Let's blame Bojo and wee Nic for everything that's gone wrong and laud these other countries who are now starting to show their response has been practically equally bad.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's exactly what we should have done.

We had a choice - get to a point where we could live life relatively normally (bars, pubs, restaurants, gigs) but not have travel outside the country, or have repeated severe lockdowns and get our holidays in August. We chose the latter and we're paying for that now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

yet another quantum leap of faith.

Not a chance that would happen
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's what's happened in countless countries and they have been far less impacted by the virus than we have - they just had to accept they werent getting on their holidays (and if they did then they had to pay to quarantine in a hotel for two weeks on their return).

It's exactly what we should have done.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Baws

Go and compile a new table with heed.

You simply don't know that nor where this will end up and who "wins" or who "Loses".
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't have the energy to argue about this

Yeah, fair enough.

Sometimes we just have to accept that there is a point where people just don't agree and have different views. Who knows who is right.

I'll bow out too. It never really gets anywhere.

and are we looking at why these countries succeeded the following their blueprint?

or just making it up as we go?

It certainly looks like the latter
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The vast majority of countries didn't follow their blueprint

Anyway, I'll leave it now.

Since December 2019 covid 19 (although it didn't even have a name) has been my working life. That and the mental health impact as that's also part of my job.

That said it's helped me get through this knowing I am helping many others get through it.

Still depressing though, especially knowing I will be dealing with testing and possibly later vaccines for another 6 - 9 months at least

Fair comment.

UK and the West messed up dealing with covid, but we got a vaccine quick.

The countries dealing with it well were used to viruses, draconian measures or like kiwis, low populated sparse NZ who could lock down at the erse end of the world.

Not so easy to stop flights in London or NY.

Airborne virus, stupid govts and people will spread covid.
