Are you saying closing our borders would have likly stopped the one in this country from mutating? I believe it's called the Kent or English variant for a reason.
It started here in the UK.
_____________________________________
two arguments here (I don't know enough about it to know which, if any, are accurate).
Firstly I think it was recognised that much of the infections in late summer/early autumn were due to travel, with the mutations from Spain becoming common place in the UK.
Secondly, if I understand it correctly, mutations are far more likely in populations where the virus is allowed to spread relatively unchecked. That's why some of the more transmissable (sp?) strains have come from the UK and Brazil, where infection rates have been high.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's not forget China in all this, nevermind strains from Kent or Minks in Scandavia or South Africa or South America or Germany now.
We should have closed UK flights in March, as N Z and China did, but that would have been racist or brexit.
Too late noo.
We are fooked.
Don't have much to add except I think the resistance to stopping flights was threefold.
1. Protecting the image of London as this gateway to the Atlantic and important business centre that relies on international air travel.
2. Resistance from business and the public when there were next to no deaths at the time.
3. Repatriation of UK nationals when there was no way to test them and the immediate hit to the travel industry again before the impact was catastrophic.
Of course now we have been through it, much of business has carried on perfectly well, in some cases much better. There defo is a new normal. Especially the up their own @rse financial sector in the SE has managed just fine.
BoJo was only just into office and didn't want to harm his new found popularity (I know) with voters.
We now know the travel industry was taking a bigger than imagined hit and it was still better to limit the travel and allow untested repatriation from all but the pandemic centres.
We have learnt our lesson for next time. Only the next time could be 40 years away and the lessons forgotten.
