Frank Lampard sacked

Interesting about him not really talking to his players? I get trying to be tough with them, but ignoring them doesn't really seem to help. Maybe he is going the Jose route.

People will complain he wasn’t given enough time, but when the stuff behind the scenes are as tense as they’re being reported then I’m not sure why people expect the manager to stay in the job at a club like Chelsea.

Marina Granovskaia's quite tidy though

Sorry for spam just thought I'd share the most interesting parts for the people who don't have an athletic subscription

Thanks for it.

Hmm... He does look like a manager who only talks to players he likes. It usually is a problem with top players-to-coach thinking a player is not in his level.

They need a master tactician. They have maybe the most talented squad in the league, someone who can get the best out of it is necessary.

6 months ago, who'd have thought Chelsea would have sacked Frank with them sitting in 9th and with us sitting on top of the table. Wonder what odds you'd have got for that?

I am a bit sad to hear this really, assuming it is true. He's a good bloke and an intelligent man. There is no guarantee that he will be a good manager, but I do feel like he should be given a bit more time.

I am just glad that our owners have been more patient with Ole. Things could still go south for Ole, but things are looking good at the moment and if it doesn't work out for him at United, at least he has been given a fair crack of the whip.

Agree with this

would Avram Grant/Tunche//Fat Waiter* (*delete as appropriate) really be a better long term option than Frank for Chelsea?

Chelsea don't care about the long term.

There is no such thing as a long term in football anymore.

“The problem was, the manager didn’t talk to the players — well only the ones he liked,” one such source explains. “I know of players who weren’t in the team that didn’t hear from him for many months. That’s very frustrating for a player because you don’t know what you have to do to do better, what the manager is thinking. It’s crazy.

“Obviously when Chelsea were on their 17-game unbeaten run (between September and December), the coach is not going to make too many changes. But you still need to talk to people. Players are going to be wary about knocking on the manager’s door themselves because it can be perceived negatively.”

Another added: “It was very weird for me that Lampard’s way of working was to be distant to the players. He was a player until very recently (retired 2016). He should know how to approach players but he seemed to have forgotten.”

And one more said: “The communication of Lampard with the players was not fluent. When I met with one of the players last year I was asking if the manager was telling him things. He said to me: ‘No, but usually he never speaks to the players’. I said I could not understand that because Lampard needs a professional relationship with every player. You need to know players need information and guidance.”

One player told The Athletic that Lampard staying on for the rest of the season would have been a “catastrophe”, with the levels of tension in the dressing room too high to recover from and players comparing his criticism of performances to Jose Mourinho in his final days at the club.

I'd like to know what Lampard was like as a player when it came to being managed. As somebody known for his high intelligence, I reckon he was somebody who was able to 'manage himself.' He strikes me as somebody who was capable of reflecting on his own performance as a player and so it may have been that he expects everyone else is capable of doing the same.

Had a feeling before Christmas he’d be the next manager sacked.

Early enough in his career for him to bounce back though.

Be interesting who’ll be willing to give him a chance though as he hasn’t really proven he’s a good manager/coach yet. May have to take a job in the Championship again which I guess he might be ok with having taken the Derby job to begin with, although having had a taste of the PL and CL he might think he’s took good for that?

Sorry to go off-topic, OP.

Hey RBW, hope the missus and you were/are okay. Last month you said she'd gotten sick, right? Hope she's one of the luckier ones.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Dave

Thanks for asking. She survived her Covid over Christmas without hospital treatment (she's quite fit and runs etc.) but it wasn't without concerning moments! She also returned to work straight away which was a huge mistake as she has now got this Long Covid syndrome which is quite debilitating. (On a load of steroid drugs, now). So she's on extended sick for the foreseeable until strong enough to fill the ranks again (like many Covid affected Nurses in the NHS). But the NHS have still provided her with a laptop and having to conduct her daily surgeries on the phone from home now!

Man United have a PE teacher in charge so it can't be that difficult.
