See when somebody gets cancer, do they become an expert on cancer.

Or when somebody gets Multiple Sclerosis, do we expect them to become an expert on that?

How about a stroke, Aids, or any other illness? Do they immediately become medically qualified?

NAW...they don't.

So how come so many people that have mental illness think that they are experts in its treatment?

Why is it that recovering alkies and junkies think that they are experts in the conditions they suffered from?

At least once a week on Radio Scotland, there's a piece on drugs and recovery from drugs and invariably they get some can on who has spent years sleeping under a bridge. Get them TF.

Fackin lunatics.

depends mags, if people have come through it they may not have the expertise but can only offer guidance on what worked for them.

as you say, it doesn't make them experts but it can offer a little help.

for my position i can only talk about the effects it has on my body and nothing else, as i say propranolol had the exact opposite effect on me that it was supposed to so a prime example of how what works for one might not work for others.

my advice to people who are suffering from mental health issues is to contact NHS24, they have team dedicated to this now, i wouldn't bother my backside with a GP, they diagnose you in 2 minutes and are not mental health specialists.

"you're depressed, take these..."

2 minutes of chatting and you're a diagnosed depressive, that alone is enough to bring some people down.

People talking about mental health is a positive and we can support each other, but as I ensure in posting, go to your GP, seek professional help and advice.

Not sure anyone here is claiming to be a mental health expert, but it's good to talk.

Quite offer, blokes bottle it up or hit the bottle and take their lives downhill...or just take their lives.

I have read some counselling techniques, mindfulness books and experienced depression, so I try to support anyone here or in person who suffers, as I have empathy and a good heart.

It's just what being human is about, but there are experts out there too.

I have spoken to doctors and counselling folk who were not that useful or helpful too, so even experts on mental health do not have all answers.

Sometimes, a friendly ear, chat or laugh works wonders, but does not make me an expert.

Not talking about mental health has got people nowhere good.

Be nice to people and that often helps, I find.

my view is that mental health has become such a stigma that when something goes wrong its because of a pre-existing condition.

an example of this is bad parenting, you get some parents who are quite happy to alleviate themselves of all blame for their childs action.

its cognitive, it's biological, they obviously have adhd, it's definitely not me.

i would bet someone elses baws that every parent who ever went on supernanny thought their child had adhd.

By the end it was shown that proper parenting techniques get the job done, it was mainly social.

Thats not to say that some children don't have it because i work with kids who do, but when addressing behaviour it shouldn't be where we start.

look outward at environment, experiences, routine, and then when it's clear thats not the issue you look inside yourself.

Interesting stuff mate.

Modem society Always talking about depression and stress now could convince kids or folk they hsve mental health issues, when it is just life...look at Lock down for example, where we have been stressed for a year.

Parents are part of the package regarding kids mental health and as you say, bad patents might cop out.

We have perhaps moved from not talking about mental health to going OTT on social media or TV, creating a problem that was not there, for some?

Complex field, let's say.
