Tully, I have to disagree. Ask any person whether they'd like to pay less tax. Anyone who says no is a liar.
When I was contracting for a year I'd have jumped at the chance to pay less tax with the whole IR35 thing. I don't complain about how much tax I did pay but I'd have been delighted to legally pay less. I certainly don't bracket myself in the moaning undeserving - well ok I don't bracket myself in the undeserving.
I don't have the figures but I'd estimate that there are contractors working under limited companies saving £21Bn in tax (based on 1.77m contractors saving £1k a month in tax).
These aren't big companies, they are self employed normal people (in the main) delivering a service at a price. No pension, no redundancy, no holiday pay - all risk.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
CS - paying less tax legally is tax avoidance not tax evasion. I am talking about tax evasion.
Oh and for what it is worth I, and I know a lot of people who would, would happily pay more tax for a fairer society with better public services.

SNP and Greens promising more school outings and 'expeds' in their manifestos. Not Gordonstoun levels but hey ho.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good on the SNP and Greens. And just to level the playing field their next step should be to insist that these public schools like Gordonstoun pay rates on all of their their buildings, you know like normal state primary and secodnaries have to do.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So local councils take rates from schools that are funded by....themselves? How typically inefficient of LG.
----------------------------------------------------------------------..
FFS. This is primary legislation imposed on on Councils by central government - councils never voted for this.
Of real concern however, are these publics schools, your Etons, Harrow, Heriots, Gordonstoun etc being classed as charities and therefore entitled to automatic and discretionary rates relief..

<There’s no funding from his estate then?
And nonetheless he did start the process.>
Glasgow City Council pays for the kids I've been taking since the 70's.
Better off areas like East Ren & East Dumbartonshire it's families.
The project was devised by a broad spectrum group.
He was asked to be the Patron to give him something to do.
Princess Anne is the Patron of Scottish Rugby I've never seen her play.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And a jolly good patron he was I’m certain you’ll agree.
He put time, effort and no doubt money in when he could have been a typical royal and turned up as and when required. The man reputedly attended circa 22,000 solo public engagements.
He was some man
That’s 220 a week for every year of his life and don’t include those he attended with Queenie.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No chance
31 solo+ public engagements every day of his entire life
Impossible.

One would think that it would be prudent to have a wee check before launching straight in.
But no.
Typical flag waving, card carrying socialists.
