Parliament puts up the honours list. Not the royal family
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Indeed, and anyone, you and I included, can nominate. However, there is a section of society, mainly in the 'home counties' that pursue that recognition or any door opening connection with the titled classes. We've had the debate numbers of times on here. Recognition should be for those that don't seek it and not those simply doingh their job for a long time or for whom it is merely another tick box in the greasy pole of social status.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

A relative of mine gained a BEM for service to a local charity.

Like all awards there will those who are more deserving; those less deserving and those who seek to exploit the situation for their own gain.

That's human nature no matter the context.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

For something like this I think the context can be very important. Whether that is geographically i dont know but it is embedded culturally within certain organisations.

I used to work for the MoD (well technically a PPP Agency of the MoD) many moons ago and there were certain groups within the organisation who were very well known for milking the honours system.

They knew the rules of the honours game and they knew how to play it. When I was there it seemed at least one of them was getting an OBE each year.

They did their jobs well enough but no-one is going to convince me that their service was so deserving of such a high profile award compared to the many scientists and engineers I worked with in private sector companies.

And I would say without hesitation that in my experience, the quality of personnel, the sheer number of hours worked and value/output delivered was far greater in the private sector than the public sector.

Yes you could argue private sector workers earned more £ over their working lives. But I have experienced both worlds and there are so many things about public sector life that make it a much easier gig all round - the working hours (only time in my life I was on flexi time), the amount of annual leave, the number of public holidays you got and just the general pace of life was much more laid back.

Yet to this day the only people I know who have featured on the honours list are public sector workers.

I'm not going to read these posts but i can summarise.

Old duffers with their houses paid for - In favour.
Those that can still get a hardon without a blue pill - Against
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Some are able to buy their house at a relatively young age.

And in favour or against what?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Royals. Old cants love them.
Young ones cant be ersed with them.

Rather simplistic but what i usually find. They love them on the islands for some reason.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah. Got you.

I’ve a “respect” for the Queen and Philip. Charles too to an extent and William.

The rest can go and earn a living like anyone else as far as I’m concerned.

I'm private sector - the Mrs local authority.

I'm better paid; have more holidays and don't reckon I work harder than she has too.

My work may be an exception though

One of our previous CEOs got a knighthood but I've no idea if he deserved it or not.

I agree with Gingers sentiment about the rest going and earning a living like everyone else*

I like(d) Harry too - especially his Invictus/mental health stuff. Not sure what's going on with him though

*except instagram influencers - they can GTF - work? pffft

You are right - last 'big' private company I worked for the CEO was a 'Sir'.

I guess the distinction I would make is that, except for the guys at the very top of the tree in the private sector I havent come across anyone being rewarded in the Honours list.

Yet in terms of fairly middle of the road time served manager level/senior scientist/senior engineer types I knew I saw a good 3 or 4 from one group and 2 from the group I worked for getting OBEs in a 5 year period within the MoD.

It just seemed to be part of what they did. Head down, do your job, nothing spectacular for 15-20 years and you were almost guaranteed an OBE.

What they were doing wasn't particularly dangerous or requiring higher levels of security clearance in any way either.

And the mechanism seemed to be that you needed 2 nominations to be considered and if you did get nominated there was quite a high probability you would get it.

And there seemed to be enough folk with chums far enough up the ladder to make scoring the nominations a bit of a formality.

It was just an interesting thing to observe for a fresh faced young chap straight out of university. It all just seemed a bit too easy that that was how these folk got OBEs.

Welsh signs a new 4 year contract.

I’m not convinced totally by him, but he’s played fine the last few games.
