Who sends war ships to a civil protest???? Facking delusional. Falklands all over this.

It's the French fishermen not happy about the deal tho
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No, thats not what I understand happened. The UK gave limited permission to fish, and the limitations go against the brexit agreement.
Regardless of the cause, sending two gunboats to deal with a few dozen fisherman - particularly without any sort of prolonged discussion first - is complete overkill. Surely it's only happening because there are elections today.

From what I just saw on BBC news the French don't like having to prove which ships have historically fished in Jersey waters.
The reason being that most of the fishing boats are small. The French want to send their monster trawlers into Jersey waters and this action will stop them doing so.
Usual sabre rattling from the frogs.

Yip,the UK government timed the fleet of French trawlers to arrive on the day of the local elections.

This is a precautionary measure. Don’t forget that those French attacked our trawlers recently and be mindful of the way the Icelandic fishermen who did the same circa 1972/73. The Foreign Secretary (was it?) sold us right down the river.

I have no tinfoil hat; I suggest you wear your glasses instead.
I said the reaction to it is overkill, not that the French fishermen involved had any plans of timing other than their own agenda.
Was discussing this on the politics thread and fundamentally the dispute is a result of the haste and rushed negotiation/implementation of the TCA.
There are dispute settlement mechanisms in the TCA that regretfully neither side have exploited.

If a fleet of UK trawlers descended on a French port they would do exactly the same, polling day or not.

The UKgov saw the UK fishing industry as collateral when negotiating the TCA. It's an industry that is unlikely to survive Brexit.
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/948119/EU-UK_Trade_and_Cooperation_Agreement_24.12.2020.pdf
The Government also recently failed to reach an agreement with Norway
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/may/01/brexit-failure-to-secure-uk-norway-fishing-deal-a-disaster-for-sector
As such, the industry has (IMO) interpreted the TCA licensing protocols to protect UK stocks/fleets.

Possibly in regard to diplomacy but the relationship the UK wanted with the EU was exactly the one they got.
So in that respect Frost and his hardliners got their way. Unfortunately it's a relationship that does not help foster the close ties business and commerce has relied on in the past.
If there is going to be a war with France, I just want it known that I would defect in a f*cking heartbeat for an EU passport and a case of Chateauneuf du Pepe.

They as a bloc and as an organization are as equally complicit in the breakdown of the relationship imo.
