If only we can find someone to buy DDG. Think we’re stuck with him till Spurs win a trophy

I did actually laugh out loud at that one 👏

Madrid aren’t tough negotiators when they let players go. I was more impressed with how far we brought Dortmund down from their asking price last year.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yep they're just like us

buy high sell low, and stick too many players on silly contracts

Stones & Dias
Silva & Rudiger
VVD & Konate

rank them....

City
Never seen ours together
Never seen Liverpool’s together
Chelsea play a back 7 so hard to compare

Tbf to Dortmund their financials must be amazing. They’ve received so much money from sales over the years and whatever position they finish in the league they’re guaranteed CL money. From what I’ve read, their fans don’t even really kick off at all the sales as they always know young exciting players are arriving every season. Their fan base is basically 80000 Rosso’s.

They’re better at selling than us, though that’s because they’re usually selling better players.

They just aren’t ridiculously unreasonable, and hard to negotiate with, by all accounts. Makes sense from their perspective because they often buy and sell from the bigger clubs - though less so recently.

It must be frustrating for the fans as well, though. They’re clearly a club that spot, and develop, elite talent. But they don’t really get the time and that little bit extra to really push on and compete with the elite.

posted on 26/7/21

Seems part of how they are able to bring top young talent in though. They generally have an understanding that the player will love on and they won't put barriers up. So it's much safer for some one like Bellingham or Sancho to go there because they are assured of game time and know that when the move they want comes along, Dortmund will be reasonable in allowing them to leave.

I think they’re just happy to turn up and sing like crazy every week and watch loads of goals. It’s a simple life for them 😹

I don’t buy that, they’re the second biggest club in Germany. I’m sure they accept it but hate it.

Fox, that’s a selling point for sure. But I don’t think talented young players would be put off going there if Dortmund had a bit more power in holding onto their players, especially if it gives them the prospect of actually winning the league and potentially winning the CL - that’s not a wild expectation when you consider the players that have passed through their doors.

We’d have ended up with Willian and Perisic. The club made the right decision.

And Boateng

Mega
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you see how fat Willian came back for preseason? He'd have made a fine supplier for Lukaku. At least they'd have been making their runs in unison.

Haaland first.

All of us, City, Liverpool and Chelsea will be after Bellingham when he’s up for sale I reckon. The latter three will probably be more desperate for him due to their lack of homegrown players.

The article says:
The deal for Varane is likely to reach £42m with add-ons.

I think the OP meant €50m.

Sky reckon the fee is £41m including the add-ons.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That seems more likely. The 50m being quoted is most likely Euros and BBC have got a bit mixed up by quoting it as GBP. I'll not be surprised if we see a later edit. For one thing, a third of the fee being add-ons seems huge. For another, everywhere else is quoting it as closer to your figure (which works out at 50 million Euros).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry OP. BBC article now says £42m. They got it mixed up with Euros, not you.

As expected BBC have now reduced the figure to £42 million.

Already beat me to it.

So £34m rising to £42 with some pretty basic add ons?

Really decent fee tbf.

£34 million? That's a 'bargain' for a player like Varane.
Even if we end up paying the full fee it's still pretty good.

£42m for one of the top 10 CB's (arguably top 5) on earth is staggeringly good business from us. It feels so unusual for us to do a deal like this.

posted on 27/7/21

Because of the fee, I have a bad feeling about this.

Maguire was £80m, slowly but surely we’re all forgetting the fee.

If he is an improvement on Lindelof and Bailly, he’s worth it.

The fee is in no an indication of his ability though. It's surely down to his contract situation

Yes, just a year left and no intention of signing a new deal. Still a good fee.

And as Glazers_Out says, he is certainly one of the top 10 CBs in the world. When you take a look at the top CB listings on various media outlets, he is actually usually in the top 5 and the stats back that up. I don't watch enough foreign football to really give a judgement on that, but general consensus seems to be that he is in the top 5 CBs. That'll do for me. Looks like a good foil for Maguire.

posted on 27/7/21

Like others here I don't watch him enough to say anything based on observation of his game worth listening to. However, in addition to the stats and pedigree, I'm quite encouraged by what I've read about him since he has been linked with us. He's said to be unusually self-critical and constantly working on flaws in his game. He seems to be very grounded. He has apparently been studying footage of United's defence to understand the system and how he could improve it. And various reports from the start have claimed he has insisted consistently that he wants to join only United. He speaks English. I think he'll be committed, serious, and another leader in the team.
