It doesn’t really mean anything. If things don’t work out that well he can still leave for far below that release clause.

Only if Barca agree to that though, which I think is Elvis issue with the amount.
Isn't it just because release clauses are mandatory in Spanish Football, so for players they don't want to sell they put something completely mental in that no one would pay (didn't really work with Neymar, I guess that's why they've gone ridiculous on this one now the oil clubs seem to be able to do whatever they want)
His agent must have been paid a fortune to get him to agree to that. Especially considering it’s in the interest of the agent to have no release clause and a one year rolling contract…
Newcastle must have put a 700m bid for him
Post, yep that’s basically it. The Neymar thing scared them a bit so they are putting in larger release clauses. Still doesn’t mean anything, release clauses at Barca aren’t activated that often. Neymar is the only player they’ve lost to one that they really wanted to keep in recent times. Players don’t usually want to leave Barca. It’s not really any different than Rashford signing a new contract without a release clause.
what cheeky Farza are
surprised Pedri's agent allowed that clause to be put in there
a coupla years of misery he'll want to be out of farza

It very much means something.
It makes things far easier for Barca to keep him if he becomes unhappy down the line.
I reckon Barca will be just fine in a couple of years. They have some incredible young talent on the books.

It's pretty unlikely that a club like Barca will keep anyone who is unhappy.

Did you not see the fuss they made over Neymars attempts to leave?

They probably thought they could get more for Neymar. The issue was around the legalities of PSG paying that money.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
More money than the release clause?
No. They wanted to keep him.

I know that, but we saw with Messi last summer what such a high release clause can do. Just seems crazy to me that you would accept that.
Do you think it’s crazy that United players sign contracts without even having one at all?

But the current Barca isn't the Barca of the last 15-20 years. They are in huge debt, stadium needs some work and the squad isn't especially strong. Pedri is much more likely to want to leave in the coming years than if he had come through the ranks 12 years ago. That is my point. With the current uncertainty at Barca, it seems like a crazy move.

Again, I’ll refer you to United. Is it mad that young English players are signing long contracts for a club that isn’t competitive?
I think it’s weird you find this surprising. This kid is an 18 year old Spaniard playing for Barca. The release clause is inconsequential as Barca are never going to give him one that risks them losing him for a nominal fee. He’s probably been well paid and it’s a good reference point for future contract negotiations when it indicates how highly he’s valued by the club.

It really depends who they are doesn't it? Pedri looks like an incredible talent from what I have seen. It just seems odd to me at this time, with all the uncertainty around Barca, that he would agree to such a high release clause. I'd be looking for something more realistic in case things do go south in the coming years.
"They never thought that the release clause would be matched"
I don't think anyone did - £222m for a footballer!
Shows how ridiculous it's gone now when Spurs supporters on this forum over the summer were talking about £200m for Harry Kane with (I assume) a straight face. Bonkers.
They have Gavi as well. Talk of their demise is exaggerated. Soon Xavi will step in and they will rebuild with youngsters.
I don’t think it depends at all. Release clauses just aren’t a thing English clubs do, there’s only a few instances of it. All that’s happening at Madrid and Barca now is that they are seeing the folly in release clauses, and so putting unrealistic ones into the contract of the players. The players are obviously fine with it, because it just means they’ll be playing by the same rules as most other clubs outside Spain.
