The reason I started supporting United (sorry πŸ˜…). Absolute legend. I don’t know if this is something that my memory embellished but I remember my granddad hating Terry Wogan for getting George drunk before a chat show appearance in the 80s. Did that actually happen?

I don't think George ever needed much encouragement they should have stopped him going on though, they were just looking for carcrash TV

Yes it did happen. He did the same with Oliver Reed as well

These geniuses were made fools of on TV when thee were only 4 channels to watch so basically the whole country saw them humiliated

In footballing terms I liked and rated Bobby and Denis just as much. But George had the glamour, modernity, and could dribble.
When the Beatles came along they were like something from the future, nobody else was like them. Even their last concert on the roof, see the difference between them and people on the road.

George was the same, looks, talent, modernity all in one package, and a truly great footballer.

Before my time but my grandad used to say Bobby Carlton was the complete footballer - there was nothing he couldn’t do.

I suspect he thought Best was just a bit too flash though

Was a shame Northern Ireland never made a World Cup with Best at his peak. Would have been great to have seen how he’d have done on the biggest stage. I wonder why he never played in 1982. He would have been 36 then so perhaps he was just massively washed up. Absolute shame.

My dad took me out of school to a ‘dentist appointment’ to go to a book signing of his at the megastore back when I was around 10. When I was in the queue and saw him for the first time I asked my dad why his skin was yellow and half the room looked at me in horror.

Phenomenal player and an absolute great, but such a waste he had to die so young.

And one word never used about George, but should be. Bravery, nobody could stop him playing.

Left United at 28, I think, and just killed time playing for LA Aztecs, Fulham, Hibs and the like after that.

Interesting fact, Robb, he finished his career at Bournemouth!

The legend of the United Trinity in the 60s was the reason many of us became reds. 1st English team to win the European Cup... 10 years after Munich... 3 x EFOTY in the same team. You couldnt make it up. Outrageous.

A year after he died ulster bank brought out a George Best commemorative £5 note of which I managed to get two.

Might be worth more than the said £10 somewhere down the line.

Yeah, I saw that. His playing career reads like an encyclopaedia of world football clubs. Shame as he should have been a one club guy like Giggs.

Contact the club and see if they want one for the museum. They'll probably give you £25m more than it's worth.
