That’s way too much. It’s not an easy debate of course and I think that too many abortions take place in place of using contraception. But women’s ability to control their reproduction has been one of the best, if not the best, developments for women in the last 60/70 years or so and that includes abortion. People should have the choice ultimately imo.

Way too much?

All a woman has to say is, the thought of being pregnant is making me suicidal doctor, and they will be able to get an abortion.

These new laws won't prevent any babies being aborted.

Each state has a different set of laws… some far far more strict than what is in the OP

You’re right. They won’t prevent any babies being aborted.

They will, however, prevent about 60,000 embryos and foetuses from being aborted, every year, according to experts on both sides of the debate.

One good reason that we should all be pro choice.

Another really good thing about abortions is that on many occasions they save an unwanted child from a life time of misery. That's the reality for far too many children as it is due to of course the parent(s) but also and in some way more so government policy. Some people born in to a horrible situation do make it out, many if left in that situation merely continue the cycle and what do you really expect when they've never seen anything else?

What's truly bizarre about this whole thing is that many of those with power behind taking the right to have an abortion away are also happy for the child to be entirely unsupported once it is born.

For that reason it just seems like some horrible power play. Controlling women and I guess it must be a vote winner for religious nutters.

The only person who should decide what’s best for them, is themselves.

Stone Age decisions made by people with the wrong chromosomes and religious fruit loops is the very definition of the lunatics taking over the asylum.

Some US states already made it practically very difficult to access abortions even before constitutional protections were lost. I read last week of the case of a woman in Louisiana who was raped at the age of 15, couldn’t get an abortion, and the father has managed to get custody of the resulting daughter, who is now about the age her mum was when he raped her.

I've read this morning that IVF provision could be outlawed in some states, because the view that any fertilised egg is a person means the practice of fertilising several and implanting the most viable ones / discarding the others would be deemed homicide. I've read that under some states' interpretation of the rights of an embryo, women may be denied cancer treatment that could harm the tiny cluster of cells in their womb.

In his ruling Clarence Thomas noted that the Supreme Court should look to correct other previous errors, such as rulings that enshrined the right to contraception and protected gay people from being criminalised.

One other thing to note: all polling indicates a clear majority of Americans oppose this ruling. The Republicans know this, and they aren't doing it with a view that they will be out of power at the next election. They are doing this because they are fully committed to minority rule over the majority, using voter suppression, gerrymandering, and using every mechanism to overturn votes that go the wrong way.

Religious fundamentalism in any form needs called out.

Those seeking to ban all abortion, especially for rape-incest cases and where mother could die in birth, need a head wobble.

You do realize what I posted was the UK laws about legally accessing abortion?

All this furore about the US has brought our judgemental folks, especially everyone’s favorite Australian who loves commenting on America with zero context outside of what he reads online, who seem to think this kinda thing is unique to America.

There’s an irony in this whole decision. Obviously the topic is highly sensitive, but a lot of the people outraged by this are the same people who are also banging on about Jan 6th and how the republicans want to destroy democracy.

This judgement is actually the most democracy favoring judgement ever. The SCOTUS has literally ruled that the federal government cannot say what you can or cannot do.

They have handed the power to judge abortion rights back to the people. They have empowered the states to self govern.

If you want abortion vote for it, if you don’t vote against it. The hyperbole that the abortion is now banned is so ignorant and naive.

13 states will enact trigger laws, if you don’t like it, vote your state senate out. Elect officials who believe in pro choice.

One thing I have found interesting in this debate is the female claims that this is a denial of the rights and equality.

On the one hand I understand they have to carry and birth the child.

But I have pondered, that a child is not the result of one person. “It takes two to tango”

Is it equality if the Father doesn’t want the child but the mother does and keeps the child then she’s for child support?

Is it equality if the father wants the child and the mother aborts it?

It’s a highly flammable view I know but I feel like, outside of rape or ince$t, surely aborting a child should be an agreed decision by both parties?

For the record this view has nothing to do with the ruling but I just feel there’s a bit of non-equality in what women seem most upset about here.

It's a kind of conservative fundamentalism as much as anything. Plenty of very religious people are okay with abortion, and there are lots of examples of secular societies that are very patriarchal where women have very limited reproductive rights.

US 'Christianism' is as much an authoritarian, nationalist and misogynist political movement as anything related to religious thought. (Which is true of many other examples of religious fundamentalism.)
