If we do land Martinez and he does play at CB for us, I'm interested to see what happens to Maguire or Varane. Martinez is left footed so will occupy the LCB role. Maguire has always operated from the LCB role as well and for France and Madrid, Varane was a RCB.
You don't typically move a CB from the side they are most comfortable defending from and have played most of their career in. I know Varane is often injured, so assuming he continues that trend, that RCB spot will be vacant at times throughout the season. The question then is... does Maguire get shunted across into that slot, or does someone else go there, like Lindelof? Maybe even one of the forgetten players like Tuenzebe or Bailly make a resurgence under ETH.
Certainly interesting to see what happens at CB this season if Martinez does come in.
Yeah I’ve thought that too? Still not convinced Varane is someone we can rely on yet with his fitness.
As for the full back positions, maybe the data indicates that we can't rely on Shaw to play more than 15 games a season, or there's a view that Dalot can really push on next season,
---------------------
This is true with Dalot. He's a bit of a conundrum as he's got the tools - big, relatively strong, fairly quick and technically sound. But he just isn't good enough around either box and as a result he isn't actually offering much more than AWB, if anything.
Unlike with AWB i think there is a player there who could be improved through good coaching. Better defensive positioning and final delivery and you would have a decent right back. They are both things that can be worked on.
I dont have much faith in him and don't think he's anything more than a back up for us, but at the same time I guess it wouldn't surprise me so much if he kicked on one season.

One thing in Dalot's favour is he hasn't benefited from a consistent partnership with an elite right winger.
I think Lindelof will feature a bit under ETH too.
Varane and Martinez would be the first choice pairing under him I would think, if we get Martinez and if Varane is fit.
Wouldn’t surprise me if Maguire is moved to the right. After Martinez, he’s the best cb we’d have at progressing the ball.

He will get a lot of games regardless because he's almost always fit.
A lot of our most slated players will improve I hope, just by virtue of the whole team being harder working, and better coached with and without the ball.
It will take time though, and we'll be beaten a fair bit I think while we're trying to learn another new way of playing. No doubt the most impatient of our fans will be calling for his head when this happens.
It’d be nice if others could stay fit, our defensive issues aren’t helped by being unable to put out a consistent back four.
Rangnick moved Maguire to the right side on a couple of occasions.

Don't you worry its just Dutch players and Dutch clubs.
Doesnt your DoF or equivalent have a strategy for the club based on the long term position, beyond just giving your Dutch manager Dutch players or players from the Dutch league?

It is basically what Jose did at Chelsea. Worked ok for him.
We surely will get rise of 3 CB’s this summer.
For anybody interested, here is a performance highlights versus Dortmund (Haaland specifically)

Looks comfortable on the ball, brave and anticipates Haalands movement well. I do think his height would be an issue for us, considering we have DDG in goal and a pretty small squad.

Height may be small issue in few games but overall he will add a lot. Canavaro was short but very good
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Small issue." See what you did there. From what I've heard, he's actually pretty good in the air, in spite of his height. He attacks the ball and has a decent spring. ETH is an intelligent man, so I'm sure he's aware of the potential pitfalls of a CB who's 5'9". If he still wants to sign him, he must think Martinez can rise (see what I did there?) to the challenge
