I never felt Barthez was over-rated, because I think very few us actually rated him, but for me he will always be one of those players that shows you don't have to be that great to win a world cup medal
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Reminiscent of Martinez in many ways, good shot stopper, unorthodox character and seemed to do well on big occasion, but inconsistent.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would have Martinez above Barthez, but I really couldn't stand Barthez. I wish we had gone for Van Der Sar way earlier and got rid of Barthez sooner
----------------------------------------------------------------------
With hindsight, it's crazy VDS spent so long at Fulham at what is usually the peak of a players career. He'd won a CL with Ajax, done well in Italy. We didn't sign up until he was mid 30s I'm sure.

As for the article, I’d go with Darren Fletcher. People may question this one because of my username, but I’d remind them I’ve had it nearly 20 years and I chose the name to take the piiiiisss because of how shiiiiiiit he was.

He had one good season in 2009 where he actually had an influence on the midfield and could pass to a teammate, but spent the vast majority of his time ranging from shiiiiit to average, yet people act like he was some massively important player for United, despite all the time everyone complained whenever he was in the team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We'd have beaten Barca in a CL had he not been suspended

I still think that red card was ridiculous

I remember at the time people saying how it cost us the final, which was somewhat overplaying Fletcher's influence.

What annoys me is that it was a tackle he didn't need to make, the tie was sewn up by then.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's the mindset of a winner though, don't give them a sniff. And if we're honest, it's a fantastic tackle and his red should have been rescinded.

He'd had a great season and was well rounded in my opinion, we did miss him in the final but it wouldn't have made much of a difference. Giggs as a replacement wasn't ideal given the way we had to play.

Yeah.

I do think we massively missed him in the final, and it could have changed the outcome, but I find it unlikely given how ridiculously good that Barca team were.

We had a couple of early opportunities in that final before Barca's goal which if we took, who knows. One of them was squandered through Ronaldo being ridiculously selfish in his last game for the club (though i guess the flip side is it was his selfishness that got us through the game against Porto with that wonder goal).

I do think we had a punters chance in that final if things had fallen our way (and maybe Fletch would have helped). 10/11 was the one where we were just completely and utterly outclassed though. That was the best football team I have ever seen, and possibly will ever see.

Yeah it may have helped us keep the intensity up with Fletcher there and help disrupt their midfield for longer, as once they got settled it became really difficult for us.

Agree that there was more chance with that final, we had a better team and, despite them winning the treble, I still think Barca’s 10/11 were a much better football team and is still the best I’ve ever seen.

That 5-0 against Madrid in the league is probably the best performance I’ve seen.

Yes, that Barca team in 10/11 were the best team in my lifetime anyway.

It was a pretty average United side too, far better United sides never got that far in the CL. We had a reasonably easy knock out run. Marseille, Chelsea & Shalke if I remember correctly.

Scholes has to get a mention.

To be fair, it's a reckless tackle when you're the last man and in your own penalty box. Facking bonkers doing that and the chances of failure compared to success were high

People who like to say that Scholes has been overrated since retiring probably don’t know football very well.

He was vastly underrated for a long time. Had he played in Spain he'd be lauded like Xavi and Iniesta.

At least your argument is that he was underrated before, because his rating seemed to chang as he got older and even more so after he retired. Top player but not a top top player.

I pretty much judge a person's entire footballing knowledge based on how they rate Scholes.

Liverpool fans I know regularly post that meme about Bob Paisley "19 trophies in 9 years" and then, the same time, state the Charity Shield doesn't count. Guess what Bob won six of?
