It was all by word of mouth. that was the point. it wasnt written down
"word of mouth"'s the wrong expression.
basically he just remember it and recited it.
that;s what we were taught anyway, but it appears that there may be some debate about that

i suspect it;s one of these things they keep changing their mind on.
it's about 25 years since i did classics , but im sure we were taught that homer recited it.
if ive got it wrong though fair enough.
