Can't beleive this great aticle has been ignored by the Murray-Guards.

do you want the guy hung drawn and quartered. he's a fellow countryman of mine and by far the best player ever to be born on these shores.
3 slam finals, multiple masters series finals. 4th best player on the planet.

maybe you want to kick the guy but i'm very proud of him

*multiple masters titles

Polly,

I give him respect for what he's achieved, even if I don't support him.

The problem is, I don't like this notion that he was born at the wrong time. I'm giving my reasons as to why I disagree with that notion, that's all.

Also, can people come out with better retorts than:

"I'm proud of him"
"He earns more money than you"
"He's won Masters titles"
"World Number 4"

He got to World Number 2 in 2009 (admittedly when Nadal was injured), but yes it was a big deal at the time, but it's been nearly 3 years since that. Time to take it to the next level.

Also, regarding his sugar-coated Masters tally, I remember in the nineties when you had win most Masters finals in best of 5 sets, now it's best of 3 sets.

He's never won the Olympics, he's never won the World Tour Finals, in fact what is Andy's defining tournament, one in which the whole world will remember?

Currently, Murray will be remembered for not winning a set in a GS final.

I really hope Lendl makes big impact on Murray's game and that he can break through to next level.

As I've said before, if he doesn't break through with Lendl this season I think his chance to win a slam is much reduced.

just true wants him hung drawn and quartered, with this latest humiliating result i have a slight inclination to agree but i will step back and regardless of how just true likes his arguements put every one of his counter arguements stacks up.
they're all there to be put up and shot down, i'm more inclined to back up them, ok maybe he's not going to win a slam, i hope and expect he will, does that not mean he won't have had a hugely successful career, are the other 44 weeks of the tour meaningless?

as an andy hater i assume the OP will be rejoicing in his latest defeat. quite shallow really

posted on 11/3/12

then again as a man who's favourite sport is rounders in a straight line it kind of puts his arguement to bed

Pol, I hope Murray breaks through but feel time is running out for him.

Polly, I've said I respect him for his achievements earlier.

Secondly, no need to get defensive and start having a go at the OP (me), when all I've done is give my opinions about this talk of him being cursed in the era he is playing in.

I'm not here to shoot him down at every attempt, he lost at Indian Wells, it happens, every player loses to an opponent they're expected to beat at some time or another, so not even mentioning that.

The problem is the excuses keep changing from the Murray guards.

In 2008, it was:
Murray may not have won a slam but Federer took 17 slams to win his first one and he isn't even close to playing 17 slams yet.

In 2009, it was:
Murray may not have won a slam but he lost to a player that had the "match of his life" (Verdasco, Gonzales, Roddick and Cilic) and never before or again will they ever achieve those heights (of beating Andy Murray in a slam ).

In 2010, it was:
Murray may not have won a slam, but his Masters tally and ranking are so high and when Nadal and Fed start to decline, it's inevitable he'll win a slam. (Fed's been declining since 2007 and still beat Murray in 2 Slam finals after that)

In 2011, it was:
Murray may not have won a slam, but he's got to all 4 GS semis in the same year and is playing against the best 3 players ever (arguable that they are the best ever and they never peaked at the same time so another bogus argument)

In 2012 it is:
Murray may not have won a slam, but...I'm proud of him.

Out of respect for Djoko, who has been there and got all the T Shirts.
Murray is all we have, win lose or draw. Who else is going to win Britain a Major?

maksi the rest of them don't give a sh!!te mate. i'm past caring what they think

Maksi, I can understand if Murray has fans and they want him to win like you do.

However, the reason I created this is due to the Murray-Maniacs turned Murray-Guards who were giving it large at the beginning of his career and now are changing the goalposts every year.

I have never seen anybody giving it large regarding Andy Murray at the beginning of his career JT. To be honest, I would be amazed if he ever did win a major and have always said that. My biggest point is that nobody on our shores has a cat in hells chance of getting into the second round of anything, and in Andy, we have a boy who mixes it with the best players on the planet. Like Pol, I don't care what the rest say. Andy gives me hours of tennis pleasure, and wins more than his fair share.
Good luck to him, who is giving it all he has, and not doing a bad job either. How any Brit can knock that, and criticize his efforts is totally beyond me. We are the laughing stock of world tennis without him, absolutely uselss.

Maksi,

He is without doubt, the best player Britain has and whilst he may give you hours of pleasure, I find his baseline brand of tennis boring and feel 80% of his points are won by waiting for the other guy to make a mistake. It is effective though, I'll give you that.

He's not alone in this, Nadal and even Djoko (at times) bore me by staying back, running for every ball and waiting for the other player to crack. Michael Chang used to do it in the 90s and I never liked it then either.

This article is from BBC 606 in 2009, check out the comments regarding Murray, when I doubted him then:

JT, he is British. We should be proud of his efforts. When did we care, or even listen to peoples predictions on BBC 606 or ja 606. These forums are full of rubbish

posted on 14/3/12

just true i have to agree with maksi surely we have to get behind our only hope of winning a slam and whilst i agree andy can be too much of a counter puncher (hopefully lendl will change this over the course of the next year) you cannot fail to be impressed by his vision, touch and feel around the court.

i know as a scot i'm biased (always rooted for henman at wimby cos i didn't follow tennis so much then) but come on regardless of how the press or other people have built him up just get on board mate.
couple of points away in january from a 3rd straight aussie final. that tells me he will probably win a slam before he retires

Murray had his best chance to win a gran-slam....he was fresh as a daisy after 2 withdrawals and will continue to just make up one of the numbers from here on.....destined to be a bridesmaid for ever and a day, unless of course he can find 3 withdrawals in a semi's...

it was a masters final. not a slam final
