Graeme Souness

This question is for the older fans on JA606.

How was the mood and the spirit amongst the fans when Graeme Souness was appointed as the club's manager? How long were the fans prepared to support Souness with his tactics and transfers?

The way I remember it was that in general the fans could see the team was in decline when Kenny left and needed an overhaul.

Souness went at it like a the proverbial bull in a china shop and lost the support of many of the players. The style of football at times was as bad as when Roy Hodgson was at the club.

He did some very good things like bringing through McManaman and Fowler and some of his signings like Rob Jones were good.

But overall he brought more duds like Paul Stewart and Julian D and Mark Walters and sold some of our best players to make room.

By the time he stepped down I still think the fans were prepared to give him more time with his legendary status winning respect. When he left though, there was a feeling of relief. There was little sign that he was turning things around.

Sourness problem was then and still is now that he is a fairly limited manager, whose style is very much like the way he played (well the way he is portrayed to of played, he was far from just a "hardman" it's functional stuff and not always pretty.

The other thing is he was/is so tetchy and opinionated that he didn't always endear himself to people, I would liken him very much to Roy Keane as a player, manager and man - even to his punditry style now.

Fantastic players don't always make the best managers as they find it difficult to accept the players they are managing aren't as good/dedicated as they were during their playing days

I still hold Souness as the main culprit for the start of our demise. He unbalanced the first team, got into a ruck with mcmahom, our hardman and did too much too quickly.
Was glad he went because under Evans, we started to play like the old Liverpool.

Souness destroyed your famous 'boot room' & then brought in a selection of donkeys in his own image.

He destroyed a dynasty.

The best Liverpool manager I've ever seen
