Do you guys have a favoured side in each of the main footballing countries leagues outside of the Premiership, and if so what teams are they? For example do you lean towards Celtic or Rangers, Barca or Madrid etc
It's not something I've actively sought to do, and I don't care too much at all about the results, but over the decades I've just found myself favouring particular sides in the main footballing countries reported.
It's probably because I'm naturally competitive so whatever sport or match I'm watching I can't help picking a team or player to win, even if it usually starts off with pretty tenuous reasons, particularly when you're a kid. It just makes it more fun if you have a vested interest, whether emotional or financial.
I've picked a selection of leagues below, and put my historical favourite next to each, but feel free to add any others.
- Spain (Barca - Always felt their style and traditions were more like United than Madrid, and really liked the side even when Madrid were dominant. Maybe El Tel was also a factor as was Lineker and Hughes. The supporter involvement is also brilliant. Would love United to be run this way)
- Italy (Juventus - Great history, quality kit, and our battles with them in the 90s just reinforced my respect, although I have always had a soft spot for Lazio as well, just because of Gazza)
- Scotland (Rangers - Started liking them in the 80s when English players like Butcher and Woods went there to join up with the likes of Souness and McCosit. Then of course players like Gazza and Laudrup played in that exciting team of the mid 90s.)
- France (PSG - Probably the only French club I'd heard of as a child)
- Germany (Bayern - Purely because Mark Hughes went there in the late 80s)
- Holland (Ajax - How can you not admire this club?)
- Argentina (Boca Juniors - Passion of their fans is unreal, I really like the kit and of course as a kid they were always connected with Maradona)
- Brazil (Santos - As tenuous as it being Pele's former club, and I liked the name )
- USA (New York Cosmos - Seemed really exciting when I was young, almost like a competitive Harlem Globe Trotters, and of course is in a great city. Would like to see them return to the league, especially with King Eric at the helm)

Spain: the two Madrids. I cannot stand Barca and tbf, IMO the most underrated player in the world and arguably better than Pele and Maradona was the Great Alfredo di Stefano. If Messi is from another planet, Di Stefano is from another solar system.
Holland - Ajax.
Germany - Bayern and i have a soft spot for the Dortmund of the late 80s, early 90s.
France - Monaco for me, a club that flirts with success and failure in equal measure and has launched the careers of a few big names.
Italy - Juventus. Past, present and the future. And they had a player i truly wanted at United over the noughties and late nineties: Pavel Nedved. Forget Ronaldo and Sneijder as being two-footed. The last true two-footed player and he was spectacular in other aspects of the game.
Israel - Maccabi Haifa. Personal and sporting affiliations!

@Red Russian - Def agree about wanting one team like Japan to beat Paraguay etc in the WC, I just can't help picking a side that's playing. Under-dogs is usually a key criteria.
BTW I also agree with the comment
'I've always liked Totti'
But what self respecting male wouldnt

Scotland - Aberdeen. I liked that manager they had in the 80s. Always thought he'd go a long way. At the risk of offending Diggler and Mexican, I've never cared for the large neanderthal element in the Rangers support, though I've met some perfectly civilised supporters of that club.

I have to admit Neil Lennon doesn't do himself any favours. He's just one of those characters that makes it easy for you to dislike him. Imagine being in that Leicester dressing room with him and Robbie Savage!
