They went through an awful injury crisis that sidelined about 6 or 7 of their usual starters in the first half of the season; they sacked their manager and brought in the inexperienced Molina, who only made things worse. Now they've hired Lotina, who has a lot of experience with relegation strugglers and they're starting to grind out results.
The trouble for most Liga sides outside the big 2 is that their squads lack depth. Very often, their league performances suffer when they're in Europe, because their resources are too thinly spread. Add a severe injury crisis and they can collapse on all fronts, as in Villarreal's case.
