The most recent rankings already dropped 2011 Madrid results. Thus, in next week's rankings, Madrid will be replacing Rome 2011.

Djokovic is safe at #1 but Nadal could in theory lose his #2 ranking to Federer here. In Murray's absence, Federer is safe at #3 and Murray is also safe at #4.

Even if top 4 does not change here, the tournament provides an opportunity to pad point totals that will be needed as we are getting deeper into the season.

Nole will want to do well to keep safe distance from Rafa. Clay is Rafa time and he would like to score well here as clay results are always the cornerstone of his overall standing. Federer, if he indeed wants to challenge for #1 spot later in the year, will need to continue to perform. As it stands, winning one slam would likely not get him there unless he also does well in Masters series tournaments.

i feel rafa has got a great chance to win rome it is strange though that despite people saying he has been given a new lease of life post MC he is now behind feds.
But i think rafa will be back to his best here.

Rome is definitely his best shot, even more than RG this year I would add, or, to put it another way, if he doesn't win it, he most likely will lose RG too (against Nole in SF or F) and go even further down the rankings later during the year...

His record is RG is superior than in Rome.

True, but Nole's recent record in slams (and the variety of the courts on all slams is close to non existent) is much better than Rafa's. So Nole might decide not to give 100% to give it all then at RG or might lose more easily to Fed in a best of 3 if Fed is physically there, etc. His record in Rome is close to perfect too anyways...
Amrit, did you actually leave 606v2 as I quickly checked and haven't seen a comment from you this weekend?

i saw this on v2 and wanted to check if this is true? i hope it isn't but summerblues your da damnnn bosssss for this stuff so just wanted you to clarify it please.

We are all amateurs at this so we may all make errors. As far as I can tell their calculations are slightly off, but not by too much.

I believe because of the max number of tournaments that one can count Nadal will drop 45 points from Queens after Rome. Therefore, Federer's effective lead is 370 points rather than 325 points. I listed the scenarios on this thread last night. Once again, they are:

- If Nadal wins Rome, he is #2 for RG
- If Nadal loses in the final, Fed will need SF or better (which, given his draw, should be very doable)
- If Nadal loses SF or earlier, Fed is #2 for RG

So Federer obviously not yet guaranteed #2 for RG but I believe he is slightly better off than the post from v2 suggested.

cheers boss i was hoping you would prove to me that infact it would be out of rafa's hands but alas i can only see bird challenging rafa on the way to the final 2bh.

The ATP site is showing Fed at 9430 and Nadal at 9105 already, so why are they not counting the point drop from Queens? Or do you mean at the end of next week? In which case you are right but it does not matter much in the big scheme except maybe for the unlikely case where Rafa loses before SF but it is possible if he meets Berdych on the way, who knows?

posted on 14/5/12

We agree on the Berdych case Nonetheless, it's still on Rafa's hands as he can get to Final or win it, so Fed still needs to try and get as far as he can, if I were him I'd aim at SF and depending on whether Nadal awaits in Final, tank the SF versus Djoko or win the whole thing and be the first at 21 masters 1000

Yes, Rafa's Queens will only drop after Rome. Agree those 45 points do not matter very much.
