Simon Jordan's Book

Will anyone be buying his autobiography? I was tempted just to see if he will actually tell the truth and find out what happened while he was in charge. Also he is a Palace fan and has lost everything so might be worth dipping into the reduced section of waterstones?

But then I read this and remembered what he's like.

The difference between him and CPFC2010 is huge. They are still trying to repair the damage he caused. When you think of how we were (and still are) portrayed in the media because of SJ. We ARE a small club compared with Liverpool! It just comes across as bitter and arrogant.

Yes we own the ground now. That was the key factor behind CPFC2010 buying the club.

I don't like Jordan because I remember asking for his autograph when I was young and he blanked me. The guy next to me was trying to tell him about how he had set up a Crystal Palace football charity in Africa for children who were interested in football and Jordan just didn't seem to care. Fair enough we all have bad days were we don't want to talk to anyone but first impressions do last.

I agree that a lot of the good he did was overshadowed by the bad and probably doesn't get enough credit for that. Also who knew Cahill would go on to be the player he is. If he had been a failure we would have said that was a smart move. But that's football I guess.

However I think he was just about himself and owning Crystal Palace was another way to boost his ego. He seemed more concerned about getting into the PL so he would have a bigger voice in football. He didn't seem to try and benefit the game and I really didn't like how he would start fights with other clubs and in particular charlton. I don't dislike charlton any more than another other London club but at times it seemed a bit petty and arrogant and seemed like he was trying to stir up a rivalry that wasn't really there.

Overall I didn't like Jordan and much prefer the current owners. I won't be rushing out to buy his book but would be interested to hear what those who did thought about it. If I hear good reviews I might get it for Christmas

How did he come across?

I wouldn't trust much of what he says. I remember he was on Soccer AM and they were talking about how much money we've spent on players and he would correct them but add more on to it like he deserved credit for throwing loads of money at players.

From what I've heard of him he doesn't seem to be a very good businessman and made too many mistakes. Ultimately it's his mistakes that he will get remembered for.

His first and biggest mistake was to turn up with his track suit on to take training.
I believe Coppell packed it in on the strength of that pretty much...Or so he told my brother in his taxi cab a good few years ago..

Well, first of all (I know it’s the Sun), I don’t like these quotes. ‘But since leaving Palace, he has not attended a single game and has no immediate plans to return.’ ‘I don’t dwell on Palace’s results. At 4.45pm I am not looking to see how they get on.’ ‘I don’t see any point to pay more interest in what is going on at Crystal Palace.’ http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/4349403/Simon-Jordan-on-Crystal-Palace-nightmare-Charlie-Wyetts-Friday-Interview.html
I understand things didn’t end well as planned for SJ, but you don’t just stop loving the Football Club you’re meant to of supported all your life.

I know most of the mistakes overruled some of the good ones. That being said; we did have some good moments & it was never boring during Simon Jordan’s reign.

MonThePalace- ‘When you think of how we were (and still are) portrayed in the media because of SJ’ How were we portrayed in the media before SJ came in & saved us from Admin? :S

crystal_purley – ‘His big mistakes were Francis, Taylor and not getting into bed with agents’
Hastingseagle- That's right CP he stood firm against agents and we would have had Tim Cahill but not for that. So probably not the best thing to have done in hindsight, but then it was his money and his principles.
Bruce was a fine example of the lack of any scruples/decency/integrity or whatever that blights the football world these days and I can remember feeling strongly about it at the time.
Francis and Taylor were poor and I hated seeing Palace play under Francis. What a waste of space Akinbiyi was as his star signing.

Funny thing was, it was Peter Taylor (at Leicester at the time) who sold Akinbadbiyi to us, or to Francis!
I mean, the only 2 decent things Francis gave us was the FA Cup Win at Liverpool & AJ.
Peter Taylor’s era reminds me of Burley’s time, both joined Palace in a transitional period where both previous characters/ managers (Dowie & Warnock) brought some excitement to SE25.

FFS Murray- ‘I remember we had all but signed Cahill from 'wall when they went down and he refused to pay the agent fees’ I heard SJ was a bit cheeky & nudged Cahill stating ‘ I bet your glad to be joining a proper South London Club’.

Hey ho, like other posters have said, Simon Jordan had CPFC at heart. Well, you would have had to if your going to put your own wealth on the table. Unfortunately, it all backfired & he left us where we were in 2001. I feel his major mistake was not getting on with Sir Steve Coppell. However, I am grateful to SJ for stepping in after the Goldberg era, bringing some of the games best characters on/ off the pitch, the Geoff Thomas/ Mark Bright benefit matches & of course the Academy. I hope he does return to Selhurst Park either as a Fan or maybe as an adviser?
Anyway, just seen this... http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/displayDetailEvent.do?searchType=2&store=396|WATERSTONE%27S%20LEADENHALL%20MARKET&sFilter=1
Will be interesting if we sell this in the Club Shop

My newsagent who is a weed has just read this book on the first week of his two week's holiday. He couldn't put it down and said it was his best read in years.
Can't wait for my dad to read his copy so that I can then get stuck into it.
Not sure why a weed would enjoy it though, don't know if I could if it was t'other way round?
