ATP Matches Of The Day: RG 2012, QF, Day11

Yesterday saw some brilliant tennis, and some heartbreaks. Fed was almost knocked out, but Delpo's injury hampered him to keep that level for another set. Fed was also struggling with timing, footwork, speed etc .which could be due to some injury. He hung in and won it comfortably in the end.

Tsonga had many peaks and valleys w.r.t. his form in yesterday's game. But when the chance or chances I should say were presented, he squandered them somehow. 5 match points I think he had, but failed. This match reminded me of the Queens finals of 2011 when again Tsonga was up and in position of win, but lost tame in the last set.

Today's matches offer little less excitement on paper.Let see

1, Nicolas Almagro(ESP)[12] vs. Rafael Nadal(ESP)[2]

Nadal is looking very strong. Hasn't dropped a set till now. Has he dropped serve as yet? Almagro when in flow can trouble Nadal. He did even on clay in MC once. But the end result didn't change. And with that record it won't change even today. Nadal should win this in 3.

2. David Ferrer(ESP)[6] vs. Andy Murray(GBR)[4]

Ferrer has looked 2nd most comfortable player this RG after Nadal. Murray played some aggressive tennis against Gasquet, but Ferrer is a different challenge on clay. For this match I want Murray to win. At least that would have some chance of being a good match. Its really disheartening to see Ferrer playing well to beat Nadal, but just unable to get enough to beat him. Not saying Murray will beat Nadal, perhaps not, but he may have a higher say that Ferrer. So in this match I'll be cheering for Murray.

So, are you saying he has an injury but lied in his press conference or are you saying that federer didn't lie and you are in fact wrong?
---------------------------------
You a wum? Keeping his cards close to his chest is not lying.

Are you calling him a liar cause in Wimby 10 he said he was "perfect" despite admitting to injuries days later?

You have lost a bot of your credibility here I am afraid.

So let me get this right, lying in a press conference is not lying?

Why can't you just accept that maybe fed is not injured and that's why he says he isn't injured.

Simples.

Yep droogle but again I think he was not fit today.

It's sad to hear that he has had this problem since December and while we were all asking why all players improve, even a 30yo Federer, we could not find a reason why Murray was stuck in his 2008 game. And I think the reson is simple, he plays a defensive, physical tennis with a frame of an attacking player a la Berdych. That puts a lot of strain on his body.

Look at Berdych, he is not scrapping right and left. If he were he would also be full of injuries.

Ok Djoko is tall too but he is thinner and much more flexible than Murray. That's why he can run right and left without having those injuries. Same for Nadal (smaller and very flexible too).

MUrray has the frame (essentially acquired) of an attacking player but is a retriever cause he has not got the guts to play his agressive game constantly.

We can see that when he does, he has great patches of aggressive games, but then it comes with 3 UEs and returns in his shell.

I believe he's got what it takes but he needs the coach to get him to focus to give him that self belief.
-----------------------
I used to think this but he's been through coach after coach and it's made little difference.

The fact is he just doesn't have the killer instinct. I'm not so sure that he can learn that.

I think he's got it but I also believe his missed opportunities are giving him self doubts. He needs to win one to prove he can do it.

I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't win one but do think that he can if that makes sense.

Can't see it myself. I'd love it to happen but I just can't see it.

It's getting to the point where I can hardly watch him play it's just too frustrating and frankly predictable. It's sad but I had a feeling he'd loose pretty easily today. Ferrer is Mr consistency, he doesn't make too many mistakes, keeps a consistent level and fights to the end. Murray struggles against that type of player as his predictable drops in form throughout matches allow the consistent player to shine through even though Murray is probably a far better shot maker when he wants to be.

Every time he gets in a 15+ shot rally you just know he doesn't have the nerve to finish it off. His opponents know this and thrive off it.

As much as I hate to say it I can't see this pattern changing.

As much as I want to him to win a GS I don't know how many more of his matches I can watch, it really is painful.

Completely understand, but now Lendl is seeing it up close we could see some changes.

In this era you need to win your first slam age 21 or earlier which is why I think his time might have gone he needs to give Lendl best chance to improve his game for him.
