I am not sure how accurate I am but I have just been thinking this. When Bates first bought the club If my memory is correct our financial status must have been worse than it currently is now. Yet we brought players in which were not free transfers and actually paid transfer fees. Here is a list of players who we signed but I am not sure how accurate the fees are. If somebody knows the exact amounts then please can you correct me.
Sean Gregan £500k
David Healy £550k
Shaun Derry £ 300k
Rob Hulse £ 900k
Eddie Lewis £250k
Robbie Blake £950k
Richard Cresswell £1.2million
I cant understand how we could afford to pay roughly the above amounts back then yet now we are supposed to be financially better off we have been having to get free transfers and loan signings for the past few seasons. If Warnock was given that amount of money now I feel we could get a descent team together to challenge for promotion. Was Bates at the club when we signed those players. I think he was.
Past transfers.

Weird, isn't it. Parachute payments maybe??

I never thought of that. Were parachute payments in place when we were relegated or did they come into effect after? you could be right.

Rob is right. We received parachute payments for two seasons.
What happened after they stopped?

I think Gregan and Healy came in before Bates arrived.
I'm pretty sure Eddie Lewis was a free transfer.
Could it also have something to do with the manager?
Warnock has gone straight out and spent 500 grand on a player, McAllister paid fees for Snodgrass and Becchio in League 1 and only signed 3 loan players.
It's Grayson who favoured free transfers and loans.
