Gaston Ramirez

Has anybody else noticed how deep he has been playing for Uruguay in the Olympics (and he and Suarez have been the best performers in such an under achieving side) in midfield rather than in the attacking three with Suarez, Cavani and Lodeiro (great young player).

Ideally I'd absolutely love us to sign Dempsey, Allen and Ramirez for next season. Having kept my eye on Allen and Ramirez during the Games, and already knowing Dempsey from his Fulham exploits, I think we could become a real explosive unit next season.

The defence are solid and despite rumours (they've been going all summer long) I firmly believe Agger and Skrtel will remain at Anfield and our back five will be the same as last season.

I then see Lucas as the defensive midfielder, with Allen and Ramirez ahead of him in the midfield zones (zone 5?). Ramirez being left footed gives the side balance too. Ahead of them I'd like to see Suarez, Borini and Dempsey as I feel that could be a brilliant strike force that could see our goal scoring abilities improve immeasurably this coming season. On the bench we'd have great variety with Downing, Henderson, Carroll (if he stays) and of course Gerrard (who I think should play a less vital part this season, keep him fresh for when we need him most).

-------------------Reina--------------------
--------Skrtel-------------Agger-----------
-------------------Lucas--------------------
Johnson--------------------------Enrique
----------Allen-------------Ramirez-------
---Dempsey------------------Suarez-----
-------------------Borini--------------------

Any points?

we gotta sign ramirez first. i'd make him my priority signing. we can cope without signing another midfielder. we need another attacking player. ramirez is perfect for us

Ramirez sits a lot deeper than you think.

Jimmy.... Im thinking that he had a tidy tounament last month?

Im thinking he has been injury free for a fair old time and has had a full pre season!

Im thinking that just because you are over 30 you arent obselete!

Now let's not get sentimental in our dotage Mr. Bassett! Didn't Ray Kennedy wear that number? Didn't Bob Paisley get more calls from clubs wanting to buy him than all other LFC players put together! JimmyTheRed

Yeah but Gerrard is the club's greatest ever player.

1man, I would like to know your views on this but, in that same tournament, didn't StevieG stay well within his comfort zone? JimmyTheRed

Wonder why you didn't mention Billy Liddell.

Jimmy - fair anough at times yes!

But hasnt Gerrard been one of the most adaptable players?

He started off as RB, has played as a RM, CM, AM and SS! He can head the ball, cross, pick and lay off! He is a true reader of the game!

thats just me!

Gerrard's last good season was in 08/09 anyway.

He was awful in Rafa's last season, and has struggled for form and fitness in the last two campaigns, so it makes perfect sense to start looking at longer-term replacements. In fact, it would be negligent not to.

At least in Brendan Rodgers we have a manager who'll try and maximize Gerrard's effectiveness - he'll either give Stevie a kick up the backside and make sure he doesn't let three quarters of a game go by, otherwise he'll find a dangerous role for him or drop him.

Either way, we won't be seeing Stevie faffing about looking to play Hollywood passes and losing possession cheaply in dangerous areas. I don't think we've had a manager who's been strict enough with Stevie since Rafa- and for the sulking Stevie did at the time, he later admitted that Rafa was right.

He's ridiculously talented, but he does need a manager breathing down his neck to keep him on his toes.
