Liverpool comfortably progressed into the play-off round of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night by securing a comprehensive victory over FC Gomel at Anfield.
Taking a 1-0 lead into the second leg, they were looking to finish the job off with a comfortable victory at home and that is exactly what happened. Brendan Rodgers, taking charge of his first match at Anfield, will have been very pleased with some of the football that was produced by the Reds, as will the fans. Luis Suarez in particular tormented the Gomel defence from start to finish and had a big say in two of the Liverpool goals.
The first arrived on 21 minutes through Fabio Borini, making his Anfield debut. Suarez showed some good footwork to get behind the Gomel defence and played a ball in towards goal. It was deflected away and Borini slammed it in on the volley underneath the goalkeeper.
The second was also created by Suarez, as he pounced on some slack Gomel defending, won the ball and burst into the box before squaring it left to Steven Gerrard who could not miss.
Gerrard also hit the post with a good effort in the second half, but it was Glen Johnson who wrapped it up with the best goal of the night. Pouncing on a loose bouncing ball, he chested it forward before lashing a superb left-foot volley into the corner of the net.
Liverpool cruised through to the next stage of the competition, the draw for which takes place tomorrow. And with Joe Allen in the crowd watching all the action, it would appear that it is only a matter of time before a new face arrives at Anfield.
