Rovers best XI 2001-12

I know this has been done quite a few times before but 5 minutes ago I literally almost fell off my chair at work having an involuntary micro-sleep so need to do anything thats slightly less boring. And unfortunately discussing the imminent season doesn't seem to quite qualify as that.

So now that our longest post-war stint in the top flight is over, what was your best team from the ten seasons? Mine would be:

------------------Friedel---------------------

Neill------Samba-----Todd-----Warnock

Bentley------Dunn------Tugay-------Duff

-----------Bellamy----Santa Cruz---------

Feels borderline criminal to leave Nelsen, McCarthy and Yakubu out but I suppose thats an indication of the depth of talent we've been fortunate enough to enjoy before the Manson family took charge.

So, over to you guys.

Lucash may be to me what MGP is to many others.

Look back thru the archives at goals conceded and Lucash will either be on his arsë facing the wrong way with one arm in the air. He only has 2 passes in his locker - the 5 yard pass to play a team mate into hospital or the cross field sand wedge. He pretty much started every game with a yellow as his tackling was frankly awful!

On top of which he's a boreish greedy Ozzy wuckfit!

Hi Lucas, if you're reading. Miss you xxx

Well Pie can't agree with the general point but that was a hilarious deconstruction.

OOJW: Yeah they were great days. I think all 3 sides that Souness, Hughes and Allardyce put together were very enjoyable to watch for their different reasons. Souness' was the most youthful and naturally gifted, Hughes' had the perfect balance as you mentioned, and Allardyce's was a study in organisation and overachievement.

Yeah I'll have to backtrack on not picking Nelsen, he's an absolute legend to me too. Although as you say Todd's tendency to lose it was comedy gold at times, booting Dugarry in the backside was probably the gem. Although the elbow on Van Persie was out of order.

Didn't van persie savagely head butt Toddy's elbow?

I think my partisan loyalty to Rovers and general dislike of Arsenal semi-convinced me at the time. In hindsight thought it was a pretty ludicrous claim!

I think that 'elbow' was in the 3-0 cup defeat at Cardiff. They absolutely battered us from start to finish and the first 3 goals came in half and hour or so. I was dreading a massacre. Took me 3 hours to get out of Cardiff and 7.5 hours to get home.

Pie........Lucash also had the aimless curl up the wing that normally went straight to the left sided central defender on the opposition. He also had the 'it wasnt me' look when giving penlaties away. I liked his sand wedge and air shots!

Glad you have back tracked on Nelsen BandW..... One of my favourite ever Rovers players. Classy in every way.

Cheered me up this thread, nice to remember happier times and why I and many others have been genuinely proud of the Rovers over the years.

King Kenny, Ray Harford, Roy Hodgson, Graeme Souness, Mark Hughes, Big Sam - Heck even Brian Kidd and Pauk Ince demonstrate how far we have fallen that a toe-rag like Steve Kean gets the same managerial position. Some of the biggest names in UK football have respected, valued and wanted to be our manager.

Pie likes Arsenal as well..... I think we should lay off them this year, as it cannot be easy being the biggest underachieving big club in history. Or is that Spurs? n They may do ok this year, especially if keeping RVP. They suffered badly with injuries last season, but most are fit now and they have also recruited well this time round.

To be honest before Arsenal ever started having a beef with us, I liked them as a club. Great football, likeable manager, that awesome invincibles season, denying Man.Ure another 2 titles.

But that cup semi and Bolton chalking up a succession of scrappy wins against them seemed to be the start of their crusade against "dirty" northern clubs. And as soon as the two combined when Allardyce came here, we became public enemy number 1 for a lot of them.

Now I couldn't care less about all that stuff in the first paragraph. They're a bunch of soft southern jessies with clueless fashionista fans and a 606 board that gives the appearance of feeding time in the monkey cage at a local zoo.

Come on pal, speak your mind!!!

To be fair i do mock arsenal fans for their own good. Loved Highbury under the floodlights, Georgie Graham's flat back 4, proper cockneys walking to the football.

The whole Arsene Wenger model is plain hypocrisy, benefitting from years of corrupt champions league money then asking for financial fair play, moaning about Stoke when they had a shocking disciplinary record.

Most of all though i feel sorry for the internet warriors that post their purile drivel on internet forums. To be fair it isn't their fault that they know jack diddly about football as they haven't a local team to support. The ground has moved, its a car park, an advertising hoarding, a duck wrap - a corporate machine that cares not for a fan - they are all a number.

How else can Wenger claim that 4th is a trophy, how else can their fans claim we're awful to Kean yet boo Wenger for rubbing Oxo, how else can football be played on a balance sheet.

However distraught i am about our current situation, we are still better off than Wengernil fans. Woolwich went many years ago, Arsenal went about 8 years ago - RIP
