This isn't a revolutionary idea, in fact this was a position that Downing regularly played for Boro and even a few times for England.
This would explain the lack of speculation around a new left back and may suggest the increased speculation of a center back.
What'd you think?
Will Downing be used as a LWB?

That's a great idea.
At the same time we can put Spearing in as centre half just to add a bit of height.
Put Kuyt in goal and put Reina up front.
Leave Gerrard, Suarez and Carroll on the bench and we're laughing.
Leave it to the manager - he's a professional.

I actually think it has some merit. You dont have a decent LB and your RB is good at getting forwards, but pretty poor at defending. You would still have the width, plus be able to incorporate your many CM players.
I dont think that it will be a regular formation, but Kenny could well opt for it for certain games.

I just remembered about Kelly - he is a good RB, so you do have one that can defend.

Glen Johnson isn't poor at defending. Anti Liverpool media made it up. Can't remember the last time we conceded a goal through his fault. A.s.k KK or SC

Personally, I think that looks pretty good.
I'm obviously in the minority though.

OP
It's a novel idea, but I'm not sure Downing tracks back that much.

Buying all these good attacking options and people want to play five at the back? Come on.

Yeah, my feelings entirely. Would it not make more sense to buy a LB?
Having said that, we've not had a decent LB for years...

I can, it was against Arsenal when Arshavin took it from him and scored, but that was like in December or something so a while ago.

Dont be silly, the media hasn't made it up. The lad takes too many chances and gets caught out of position too often. He did have a decent end to last season, but over the course of his career he just hasn't been good enough. I'd make him into a RW. Tony Adams has in the past spoken of Johnsons inability to learn how to defend properly.
