PARALYMPICS

Well, we have all been treated to some very sombre sights over the last ten days and evenings with athletes from all over the world, who have severe problems, all of them smiling and all the medal winners. NOT ONE COMPLAINT OF BEING A PARALYMPICS ATHLETE.

So next time one of our premadonas hurt themself or complain about being hard done by. Let them just remember some of the names that they have seen having to compete and against all odds. From Premier League to League Two. Grow Up

I do not want to comment on the good or bad sides of living in America. NY knows my opinions are somewhat different from his. On this 11th Anniversary of the most tragic day during my time in the USA I just want to remember all that lost their lives that day. As someone who worked in the civil aviation business for 35 years I especially remember the cockpit and cabin crews who were just doing their jobs:

American Airlines Flight 11, Boston to Los Angeles, crashed into the World Trade Center.

CREW: John Ogonowski, Dracut, Mass., Captain; Thomas McGuinness, Portsmouth, N.H., First Officer; Barbara Arestegui, flight attendant; Jeffrey Collman, flight attendant; Sara Low, flight attendant; Karen Martin, flight attendant; Kathleen Nicosia, flight attendant; Betty Ong, flight attendant; Jean Roger, flight attendant; Dianne Snyder, flight attendant; Madeline Sweeney, flight attendant.

United Airlines Flight 175, Boston to Los Angeles, crashed into the World Trade Center.

CREW: Victor J. Saracini, Lower Makefield Township, Pa., Captain; Michael Horrocks, First Officer; Amy Jarret, flight attendant; Al Marchand, flight attendant; Amy King, flight attendant; Kathryn Laborie, flight attendant; Michael Tarrou, flight attendant; Alicia Titus, flight attendant.

American Airlines Flight 77, Washington to Los Angeles, crashed into the Pentagon.

CREW: Charles Burlingame, Captain; David Charlebois, First Officer; Michele Heidenberger, flight attendant; Jennifer Lewis, flight attendant; Kenneth Lewis, flight attendant; and Renee May, flight attendant.

United Airlines Flight 93, Newark, N.J., to San Francisco, crashed in Shanksville, Pa.

CREW: Jason Dahl, Colorado, Captain; Leroy Homer, Marlton, N.J., First Officer; Sandy Bradshaw, flight attendant; CeeCee Lyles, flight attendant; Lorraine Bay, flight attendant; Wanda Green, flight attendant; Deborah Welsh, flight attendant.

I've known so many crews during my life that any could have been on those flights and I consider all as family.

God Speed, and my thanks and gratitude to them all.

Every year at my wine shop I had a notice on the door from 10-12 September under the title "I'll Never Forget".

There but for the Grace of God, another human being that appreciates life for what it is, I know personally that Yankee does and so does Hound. I am glad that I am not alone and know that there is something else in life.

GOD BLESS YOU

I do wish that the American Media would understand that not everyone who died was an American, and the attack was on the world, not just America. There were people from over 200 Countries who died but they don't seem to remember those people.

I know the Pentagon and would be target the White House are American, but the World Trade Centre was just that, a World Trade centre which happened to be on American soil. I, like everyone else abhors what happened, but I wish they would put out the correct facts.

NY:
I could not agree more that one problem with the "locals" over here is an overly self-centred view of the world (OK, I'll accept your earlier point that the World Series includes many foreigners). In my life in aviation I was somewhat upset when aircraft accidents did not seem so important if "no Americans were killed".
Because of my tiny UK pension I'm happy the pound keeps going up against the dollar, but we are going to England next year... (Hopefully after the 2013-14 season starts).
I assume the USA will qualify for the World Cup, but the result the other night was a bit of a shock.

Did you watch the game last night Micky? Doncaster Rovers v Jamaica, or that's what it seemed like. The old Rovers, 79% possession at half time with nothing to show for it. The colours also helped to give the impression we were watching our beloved team, thank you Nike.

Agree Micky, if it doesn't involve Americans or ways they can make money, no one gets to know. I have no problem with the remeberence of 9/11, but please accept that the dead came from all over the world, including Muslim countries.

Lack of education regarding this type of situation led to the recent killing of 6 Sikhs in a Temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, because some ill educated moron thought he was killing Muslims, what a plonker!!!!!

I well remember at DGS Jimmy Vickers teaching a class on religions of the world - we all had to take it. It is so easy when one has had the benefit of a good education to forget many people do not.
However, the events in Libya brings one down to earth.
I went to Benghazi and Tripoli just after Gaddafi took over - I have some frightening tales about what they did to any Jews at the time. It is amazing how many conflicts are about "religion".

Aren't all wars based on religion in some way?
