Were You Influenced On Who To Support?

This article was first published by a good mate of mine called Ginger_Marks aka strangely brown in March 2010 on the old BBC606 and I thought I'd like to air it on here with his permission.

"I was talking to some colleagues over lunch today and of course the topic was football. I asked everyone "how did they come to support the teams they did"?

I became a Chelsea supporter after my father took me to watch them at Fulham. Others in the group said similar and some others were honest enough to admit they just followed their team because they were successful.

But tonight I was browsing through 606 as one does and found this very sad story by this unfortunate fan called BobbyofTrafford who of course is the old BBC bigot and racist of 100+ failed memberships called Robert Heenan;

by BobbyofTrafford (U13871886)
"I remember as a 5 year old kid in 1977 supporting Liverpool on the day of the cup final game against Manchester United and the severe beating I got from my dad prior to the cup final made me a devout Man Utd supporter ever since".

"My old man has never ever liked Liverpool football club and the thought of any of his blood supporting Liverpool, Leeds, Man City or Arsenal makes his blood boil and believe me when I say that my dad is one not be crossed".

Hopefully that boy is not too scarred by his experiences But how did you come to support your team?

I support Arsenal because of my family.

Also because of my family, at the age of 4 I decided to support Tottenham. This was because I felt sorry for the fact that they were the butt of all jokes, awful, always lost to us and a general laughing stock.

This lasted about 3 weeks before I realised the error of my ways and I have been a devout Gooner and laughing at Spurs ever since

My family wanted me to support Arsenal. Tried to get me to watch all their games when I was younger

Wasn't having none of it though, much rather support my local team. And I loved Blue and hated all things Red. My Dad's best friend grew up on Fulham Road and used to go a lot in the 70s/80s. He got me into it really and took me to my first few matches. My neighbour has been Chelsea since the 60s (ex-STH) and sometimes took me as well until I was old enough to go on my own

The joys of being a 1st generation and lone Chelsea fan in the family

My dad was introducing me to football when I was about five (1964).
Typhoo tea used to have pictures of the old division one teams on the back of the packet - the 1st one he showed me was a pic of the Chelsea Squad, so they were the 1st team I'd ever heard of, liked the name and so began the start of an unconditional love affair that has so far lasted about 48 years!

How my dad wished he'd shown me a pic of Vanilla - I was born only 10 minutes walk from the ground!

God smiled on me that day

Im always a believer in the club picks you.

If you were "peer pressured" in supporting a team that means you were always going to support them anyway.

I was in a school and family full of United, Liverpool and Arsenal fans, there had to be one gloryhunter that went with the team that hasn't won anything for 25 years (at the time)

There was no chance of me ever supporting Arsenal - what an ugly name that is!
