Tablets

Off topic but I am thinking of getting a tablet but am unsure of if I need one and if I do which to get. I already have a smart phone (Samsung) and a laptop but like to have a nice gadget now and then!
I dont want an Ipad as I think they are a bit expensive for the budget I have, i was looking at Blackberry playbook. Has anyone any experience of them? Do they run on an android system?

By the way if you put 'iphone not working' in google you get about 990 million results. I am not saying this proves anything but it does show that iphone has its fairly (large) set of unhappy users as well.

-------------

If you put 'wicked games smells' in Google, it comes up with 41 million results.

but I still think the iProducts are the best on the market.

No worries if you think "iProduct" is the best then its your opinion and obviously my opinion would be different. If you do go on some independent tech-review websites you will begin to see that that iphones/ipads have begun to be surpassed in specs over last couple of years. iphone had the early move advantage but the landscape has changed and more specifically in last 18 months or so. There is severe competition and no one seems to be a clear winner. There doesn't have to be one and I am sure all the brands will still be around a few years form now. It s probably best for the consumers if the companies are on their toes and no one ends up with a dominant market share.

You have way too much time but denying reality doesn't make it go away! Good you are happy with your iproducts but there are millions who seem to have 'iproblems' as well.

It depends what people are talking about in terms of iproducts....

If you mean the hardware... Android phones are generally more powerful (top end)

If you mean the OS... I'd agree, iOS is better, more stable and more natural to most users. It also doesn't get reskinned by the manufacturer.

If you mean the apps... The professional iOS apps are light years ahead of Android, but Apple do control their apps much more than Android... So if you want huge choice and apps like console emulators... Android is better.

There is no right or wrong choice, at the end of the day. They both have alot of plus points and minor negatives that are just personal choices/experiences.

I think light years may be an exaggeration here. It was probably true 2 years back. If you look at 95%+ of the users the apps they use most will be things like Facebook, Google Maps, You tube, BBC, Sky, DailyMail, Web based mails, Betfair, amazon, ebay, sainsbury, asda, light/fun games like angrybirds etc. Since you work closely with both apple/android devices, give me an example in this space where an android app is far inferior to iOS? This is a genuine question and I am not challenging you or anything. I have android apps for all of these and they seem to work brilliantly on my galaxy S2. I am just interested in knowing the other side.

I do agree though that in general iOS universe may have more better quality apps than android ones. Developers always liked a fixed screen size. Plus iphone had the early mover advantage. There is also this perception (probably true) in the developer world that Apple users part with their money more easily so they devote more time resources to it. A few trends may have an impact on this though. Android already has about 3 times the share of smartphone market compared to Apple. So the bigger size of the pie should lure more developers. Also as I said earlier most of the apps I use are actually free and built by companies trying to reach an ever bigger share of consumers like Amazon, ebay, sky, bbc, facebook, Youtube etc. There is no reason for them to prefer iOS as they are not selling their apps.

Production tools, Creative tools.....

Music, video, imagery etc.

Android is catching up, but things like Guitar amp modelling, controlling a cinema camera with an Ipad etc.... there is nothing close.

The big companies will have both platforms.... it is the niche, but very powerful tools that tend to be iOS centric... If they are popular, a lesser version sometimes appears for Android, but not always.

big time.... I wasn't too impressed with the iphone5 news... More headaches, ipad will go 16:9 too, sooner or later, just makes so much sense in a video driven world.

Still, way, way smoother than developing for Android... It's making me cry... 4 sets of graphics, loads of code for every possible screen dimension, density and mode (portrait / landscape).

Hopefully worth it though, then i'll make a billion and come and buy UTD.

JSP, the thing is that I totally understand a developer's point of view in that it is easier to code for iOS. but I think any system which limits user's choice is ultimately not a good one. Android makers can easily all agree to produce phones with same dimensions but its not something the consumers want.

Microsoft was earlier criticized for the same when basically application were written for the Windows. Then open-source came along and then things started moving onto the web so that basically the device didn't matter. People wanted the same experience across different platforms. iOS/Apple goes in the opposite direction and seems to restricts choice for consumers. Recently some analysts were even bigging up HTML5 a lot saying it will eliminate the need for apps and web could deliver the same experience as an app. I already see it in some websites on chrome on my android (Facebook, Betfair, Amazon etc). You would hardly know whether it is an app or a webpage. In fact there are more options through the webpage than in the app. But I don't know the exact direction things are progressing in at the moment.

There will always be users who have different requirements from their phone and a 3.5" or a 4" screen is not ideal for everyone. In the Android world as well most of the market share is with 4-5 devices so developers can concentrate on that and leave the others to have sub-optimal experience until at least the apps starts generating interest. Personally I am happy as long as the apps I use most give me a good experience. There are 500,000 apps out there and I don't really care if many of them may not run optimally on my device. If it was any good then the developer would have created a version for my phone unless of course my phone represents a tiny set of consumers.

Wicked games <APPlause>

100% agree

I'm with you Wicked.... I've spent a small fortune on our Android app, because I believe in the platform.

It's a pain in the ass though.... no two ways around it.

Cheers for the replies, been away with no signal over the weekend and it was killing me not getting online! will probably buy myself a Google Nexus by whats been said if I get one.
On the phone front I'm thinking I might try going back to Nokia when my contract is up in the new year, not overly impressed with the battery life of the Samsung Galaxy S I have but other than that it has lasted me well, i work where it gets knocked and squashed in my pocket regularly and even dropped it in water and its still going (i did have to take it and pay £50 at a phone shop to get it going again though).
