Debate

Morning lads

Now before I start, I just want to make it clear that this article is about discrimination/race so if anybody doesn't want to get involved feel free to click off this article.

Anyway, this follows on from a thread yesterday which I found quite interesting.

I'll get right to the question. Should we grade discrimination based on past events and number of people affected ?

e.g Given the number of people who suffered abuse due to their skin colour - should this hold more weight than someone who suffers abuse due to their hair colour for example ?

This may sound ridiculous to some but I ask them to think of the individual.

Lets keep it interesting.

Oh and one rule - no Suarez/Terry comments

I'm pretty sexy. Dark hair, brooding hollywood looks and shoulders that could have belonged to the Rock but being an Australian growing up in ye olde England I was called a convict and strangely asked every 5 minutes what was happening in Neighbours (which at the time was like 18 months ahead of England).

Once I explained that I had no bloody idea they badgering stopped.

Guess I had it easy

Never been to Adelaide but heard good things about it. If you get a chance head out to the Gold Coast

Simply wonderful.

Wow, haven't checked my article since yesterday and I'm stunned at the comment count.

I think the admins should start creating Knighthoods for posters like myself.

I'm going to provide my own conclusion to this thread given that I started it. TooR made a very valid point earlier in the thread about equality being unachievable given that we class abuse differently based on:

- numbers affected
- media coverage
- past events

etc etc

Ultimately, ending racism would be a way to achieve that equality but is that feasiblw when we say abuse can be acceptable and unacceptable based on factors such as those listed above.

I'd like to think that 5 people being abused for their skin colour would receive the same support as 100 people who have been abused for their skin colour.

Numbers are irrelevant when you're on the receiving end

Look at Martin Samuels comment (Daily Mail) from earlier in the year...

"Those who equate racist insults to jibes about hair colour or girth are rightly dismissed - there is no historical persecution of the ginger-haired or portly"

/\ This is such a dangerous approach to discrimination that the fight will forever be counter-productive. Martin Samuel is so wrong on this in my view. I'm not saying that he detests racism, he clearly does but I can't help but think that his views are stone age stuff.

If you're prepared to put racism on a pedastal then be prepared for an eternal battle

Thank you all for contributing
