From this article about the assault on Chris Kirkland:
http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/sport/leeds-united/latest-whites-news/sheffield-wednesday-v-leeds-united-fa-calls-for-crackdown-1-5050101
This quote:
“From the FA’s point of view, any individual involved in an incident like this should be dealt with by the courts and face the most severe punishment possible."
The hooligan who knocked Chris Kirkland to the ground has been sent down for 4 months. He will probably be out in 2 if he behaves. Not sure if this meets the most severe punishment possible the FA were looking for.
However the statement made by the FA raises a question. They say "any individual involved in an incident like this should be dealt with by the courts"
Chris Kirkland wasn't punched or head butted he was shoved in the face by the palm of the hands. This sort of pushing and shoving argy bargy happens periodically between players sometimes it gets even worse with the odd head butt and deliberate elbow to the face.
Remember Di Canio shoving that ref to the ground? Did he go to jail?
Then there was the flying Kung Fu kick by Cantona was he dealt with by the courts?
So if players do this sort of thing in the future are the FA expecting them to be dealt with by the courts and be sent to jail?
I think Aaron Cawley should be sent to jail and for longer than four months.
But what about players who push and shove and opponent to the ground should they be subject to a jail sentence as well?
What do you think?
Jail For Players Also?

Should ALL have served time
HOWEVER
The reason fans get cracked down on is that the law sees the potential for chaos! If fans dnt think u will get into big trouble (jail time) for coming onto the putch and hitting players, then players will not want to play in fear of their lives.

Roy Keane admitted setting out to deliberately hurt someone and basically ended a blokes livelihood doing so. Whilst players have the option to pursue these issues through the Civil Courts, why in an instance like this where the offender has admitted to his intent, do the police not look to get a conviction?

that's correct Novak, the player was Alfie Inge-Haaland.

It depends. The Premier League is already way too soft and I wouldn't want to deter players from making challenges further. However some things that have occured on the field would have seen people imprisoned if it happened on the street. I think in the context of the game, some leniency is required but anything out of play, off the ball or overly aggressive should be looked into and potentially prosecuted. Cantona and Keane are prime examples of people who should have been charged

There is no way on earth cantonas kick was worse, sorry but while I don't condone what he did the circumstances surrounding it were no where near as bad.

Justice prevailed.. let's hope they identify those who tried to rip the net and award them a 50 year ban from all football ground.

Good point that, why should players get away with it also if they attack an opponent in a simular or worse way than that hooligan did, I remember Cantana getting a few months for THAT kung-fu kick on a fan, Barton getting a jail term for attacking Dabo in training a few years back, I agrree that if theres a violent shove with intent like on Friday night it should be treate no more differently, no matter if its Messi, Ronaldo or a L2 player!! Not defending that pillock but any footballer should be treated no differently IMHO if they commit anything liek that or worse!!

I know it is a contact sport and there will always be injuries and that is part of the game but theres a difference if one player attacks another with INTENT and a bad challenge on an oponent. is way different to intentionally attacking an opponent and should be treated no differently. Joey Barton in the last couple of years should have been jailed on two occasions, the 1st for punching Mortan Gamst Pederson and the other for elbowing Tevez at the end of last season, but all he got was a fine, ban and yet another slapped wrist for those.
