Liverpool narrowly lost away to Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

Brendan Rodgers fielded a youthful Reds side, featuring the likes of Jon Flanagan and Adam Morgan as well as debutant Conor Coady. Despite the lack of experience in the team, and the fact that they were playing a tough team away from home, Liverpool produced a promising performance even if it was lacking in conviction.

The first half was very comfortable for the Reds and Anzhi seemed happy to sit back. Liverpool had a chance to take the lead when Jordan Henderson found himself advancing down the right towards the goalkeeper, but he lacked the confidence to take the shot on himself and instead tried to pull it back for Adam Morgan, but it was easily intercepted.

Despite showing hardly anything in the first half, Anzhi took the lead with seconds to go before half time. Mbark Boussoufa fed it to Lacina Traore, who flicked it over Sebastian Coates before lobbing it over Brad Jones into the goal.

Liverpool continued to search for the equaliser in the second half, although by now Anzhi had started showing more urgency in their play. Traore had a couple of good chances to double the lead, but headed straight at Jones before shooting wide from a good position.

Liverpool's attempts in the second half mainly came from long range, with Suso having a good effort saved and Jonjo Shelvey dragging an effort way wide following a free kick. The Reds passed the ball around well but, like in so many games previously, could not find a way through and Anzhi held out for a victory.

The win takes Anzhi top of the group with Liverpool in second place, with Udinese and Young Boys playing their match currently. Liverpool's next match in the competition is against Young Boys at Anfield.

Suso is perfect for BR's system.

I think it is time to give a him a chance centrally.

Shelvey started the season well but has faded and missed an opportunity to really grab a place by the balls.

Suso is so good technically, would love to see him with Allen and Lucas in midfield, or Sahin.

Move Stevie to the right of the front, he would be better there than Suso has been.

-------------------

my thoughts exactly!!

BR seemed to want to try gerrard on the right (Being : liverpool, episode 5 in his conversation with jonjo he says as much "stevie on the right"

I think it would work

Good chance gerrard will move to the right when Lucas is back we need him in and around the box and he will get us goals

Gerrard's days of running back and forward down the line are long gone.

"stevie on the right"

----------

Could mean the triangle of midfielders...

With Shelvey moving to the top and Gerrard to the deeper role on the right.

Disagree TOOR he's not as athletic as he once was but he still has the energy and stamina to play wide right of a front 3

posted on 8/11/12

No he doesn't, that's why people are complaining about him not tracking back. He can't do it anymore, he has to preserve his energy throughout the game now. That's why he doesn't play on the right and why his best position is behind the striker.

A central midfield player does more yards in a match than a wide forward.

Gerrard can easily play on the right.

I'd rather see Gerrard give his all for 60-70mins then be subbed off than strolling around the pitch like he does now.

I'm glad the manager disagrees.
