It would be interesting to know how the number of penalties has increased since say the 1950s when it was necessary to commit GBH or actually almost catch the ball in the line before one was given.

My recollection is that they were usually converted too, but goalkeepers were not nearly as big as they are now and possibly not as agile, so they could not cover as much of the goal as they can now. Ken Hardwick, our goalkeeper then, was only about 5 feet 8 and whilst he may have been smaller than some he was not exceptionally so.

Donaldo, don't forget that in those days keepers had to stand perfec tly still in the middle of the goal and not come off their line. This gave a big advantage to the kicker.
