Liverpool suffered a shock defeat in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday evening as Oldham Athletic knocked them out.

It took the home side just two minutes to find the net as Matt Smith headed in from Youssouf M'Changama's cross, despite Martin Skrtel's efforts to keep it out.

Liverpool took a while to settle but scored the equaliser 15 minutes later. Luis Suarez received the ball on the left and then cut inside towards the Oldham defence, before playing it against Cliff Byrne and slotting it into the bottom right corner.

But it was Oldham who struck the next blow right before half time, when Reece Wabara's cross was fumbled by Brad Jones into the path of Lee Croft, who squared it to Smith to tap in.

Just three minutes into the second half, Oldham extended their lead as Carl Winchester's cross was headed over Jones and into the far corner by Wabara.

Both sides had chances to score more goals, with Liverpool in particular guilty of missing some good chances through Fabio Borini and Raheem Sterling. Joe Allen pulled a goal back with 11 minutes remaining when he volleyed in following a corner kick despite a deflection off Jose Baxter, and Steven Gerrard frustratingly struck the crossbar in injury time with a great effort, but Oldham held on to progress to the fifth round.
