Bit early for this, I know, but it’s pretty clear who the front runners are anyway. So let’s discuss the possibilities and weed out the improbable.
Luis Suarez – A vilified and hated figure by a lot of fans, but you cannot doubt his qualities as a footballer. Quite unplayable at times and for me the favourite to bag the award. Top of the goal scoring charts, he was often criticised last year for wasting too many chances. If the definition of a World Class player is someone who would get into any team in the world, then Suarez is World Class.
Gareth Bale – Monkey boy always looked likely to turn into a decent player, but this season he’s taken his qualities up a few notches by adding goals to his game. A crucial player in the spurs drive for CL place, he has been their talisman and top goal scorer this year. If Spurs get that much coveted top 4 place, they would have Bale to thank for it.
Robin Van Persie – Judas made the move from Arsenal to United in the search for trophies and titles. Well he got it in his first season and has looked United’s best player by a mile. After losing last years title on goal difference, Fergie needed a top quality goal scorer. I don’t think it’s unfair to say that RVP has made that difference from last year. An outside chance of the award.
Juan Mata – Another player who looked class from last year, but has added goals to push him up a few notches. Technically brilliant, Mata has outshone the big money signings of Hazard and Oscar. An outside chance of the award, but still a worthy mention.
Frank Lampard – Though unlikely to be in the short list, still a worthy mention for a brilliant Midfielder. He’ll probably end up leaving Chelsea at the end of the season, but once again has shown his worth with plenty of goals.
Marouane Felliani – Was quite brilliant during the start of the season, but his form has tailed off lately, along with Everton’s hopes of CL qualification. He probably needs a move to another club to push him up a few levels, but what he has done with Everton is quite decent. No chance for the award, but a decent shout.
Michu – The progression of this former Rayo player to the PL has been nothing short of remarkable. His goal scoring record is not a fluke and he looks like he’s loving life in Swansea. Plus he’s managed to win Swansea a trophy already. Something that only RVP can lay claim to out of the players in the list. My dark horse for the award.
Santi Cazorla – No other reason for including him in the list but the fact that I’m a Gooner and I love this little guy. A true quality player in a team full of mediocrity. I just hope we can get better players in to supplement Cazorla’s quality. Zero chance of the award.
