players who regressed after leaving Arsenal

Adebayor
Hleb
Nasri
Petit
Overmars
Flamini

Anelka
Song

there's probably some more, there's countless other players who were sold at the time when they were starting to decline but this is more about players who parted ways when they were in their prime.

None of them hit the heights they did at Arsenal, a few of them pretty much ruined their careers by leaving. Wenger's often described as being a poor motivator and tactician. is this really the case when he seems to get more out of many players than other managers could?

How are you defining regression?

In terms of skills improved? Influence on the team they joined? Or some other abstract way?

Very subjective either way...

I think many players have left Arsenal and done extremely well... Nasri has a winners medal afterall

in terms of how well they performed as individuals. It is subjective but doubt there are many people who would say any of them played better after leaving.

I think Silvinho and Van bronckhorst, but then I don't think they played for us too long! I cant remember.

At the end of the day, any true sportman would want the best of both worlds, to be influential in the team and to win medals.

For example, when I played last month in the tournament, we won every single match, yes I played but I wasn't that influential (even though the captain said I was, he was lying). Yes I scored a few points but there were many points that they literally scored without me touching the disc.

Yes I like to win but I would also like to be effective in that win!

I think Man City would've won the league without Nasri to be honest! Barcelona would win without Song, etc

It’s interesting… I think Anelka was a far better player later on in his career than when he played for Arsenal. What he lost in pace he gained with experience and strength.

I have heard lots of people say that Van Persie has gone up a level since arriving at United. I don’t think that it necessarily true, however I do think he is able to show off his talent more effectively with United.

Bull. He was better at Arsenal. He's scored a lot of goals for Man U, yes. But he'd do that anywhere.

Better is subjective, he has been the main catalyst in a side that could well go on to have the record PL points total.

I agree with Anelka MrMortimer, he was excellent for Chelsea and people forget how good he was at City as well.

As a whole in Anelka's career he didn't achieve as much as someone with his talent should have done tough, it took him 9 years after he left Madrid to get to Chelsea but he should have been playing for top clubs his whole career. If he stayed with us his career could have been really different, but we bought Henry and a new training ground the money so can't complain!
