Ranking behind only the Tour de France in terms of prestige, the Giro d’Italia is one of the highlights of the racing calendar.
Starting on Saturday the 4th May 23 teams and 207 riders will compete 21 stages.

Nibali deserves this win. He was arguably the best rider in last years TDF but Liquigas team were weak and couldn't give him the support the Sky boys had. I think it is a shame Wiggins has been ill as I feel Nibali would still have beaten him and the battle would have been worth watching, as the relative strengths of the two teams are more even.

Fri, 24 May - stage 19: Ponte di Legno-Val Martello (139km)
Stage type: High Mountain
Three big mountains will test the best on a stage which features a cumulative 4,300m of vertical climbing. The legendary 23km ride up the Passo Gavia and 21.7km ascent of the Passo di Stelvio, which reaches the highest point of the race at 2,783m, dominate the opening half of the stage. The final 22km, to the finish at Val Martello, features gradients of 14%.

Stage type: High Mountain
A final day in the Dolomites of northern Italy which has five categorised climbs to negotiate.

Sun, 26 May - stage 21: Riese Pio X-Brescia (197km)
Stage type: Flat
Just like the Tour de France, the final stage is a procession ahead of several laps and a big sprint in the city that will host the finish. The traditional finish in Milan has been ditched in favour of Brescia.

Look out for: Italy's Elia Viviani. His Cannondale team is based nearby and they will be looking to deliver him to the finish in front of an expectant home crowd.

Stage 20 altered.
" Stage 20 was set to feature five categorised climbs during a final day in the Dolomites of northern Italy but the Passo Costalunga, Passo di San Pellegrino and Passo Giau have all been omitted from the new route.
The climb of the Passo Tre Croci remains, along with the final climb to the finish at Tre Cime di Lavaredo, weather permitting. "
