So rumours are that David Beckham is about to retire.
Long playing careers, won a fair few trophies but is he just a glorified marketing tool? Or is he one of the best players England has produced over the past 20 years?
If you needed a free kick or long ball he seemed to be your man, but did he offer much more?
Would you have liked him at Arsenal?
Be interested in your thoughts....
Beckham - overrated or top notch?

Yes agree but feel that he and “the brand” (successfully) were able to manage the media. Not necessarily a bad thing however.

To go from the most hated man in the country, to getting that "brand", required him putting his head down & working extremely hard - and he pulled it off.
And sometimes we just have to put our hands up & say, "Well done fella".
And apart from that Rebecca Loos stuff (who wouldnt? ) he's rarely been in the papers for the wrong thing(s), which for a young man, with his looks & all that money probably isnt the easiest thing.
Fair play to him.

Very good player when at his best, but nowhere near world class to be fair.
Mind you, few will match his explois in Madrid where he single-handedly won them the league by cleverly demanding to be substituted, knowing full well Jose Antonio Reyes would feel so in awe of the space he was filling that he'd be obligated to score twice.
Beofre anyone has a go, I'm not knocking Beckham here - more the style of reporting that seems to surround him.

Again agree, although the whole ‘brand Beckham’ was generated and implemented (with military precision I might add!) by Victoria and had little to do with the Beckham himself.

Beckham was not a World class player, neither was he the most skillful player around. However he was possibly one of the best or even the best crosser of a ball you will ever see & his dead ball kicks were just as good.
He comes across as a decent guy, who has made the most of his image and opportunities in life.
I am pleased however that he did not get the record for England caps, as in my opinion the last 30 or so caps he was awarded were not because he was the best available for selection, just that he was David Beckham!!
