Daniele De Rossi

Heard it on ESPN commentary during the Italy vs Uruguay game that Roma have decided to sell De Rossi and are willing to listen to offers.
If that is true then we shouldn't waste any time and bid for him. For me that would be the perfect central midfield signing. I don't think he will cost much because of his age but he still has at least 2-3 years at the top easily.
I have always been a huge fan of him and wanted us to sign him. I believe he would have a similar impact like RVP had. Players that are in their peak is what we lack currently and a mid field of De Rossi-Carrick would be certainly very tasty.
Thoughts?

I would have no problem if we signed him, but, to be honest, whenever we have played Roma, he hasn't stood out to me.

Give me the choice of living in Manchester, or California and I wouldn't even have to think about it.

But he is a professional footballer, not a McDonalds toilet cleaner.... Small but important detail.

And yet, you had no idea on whether he was a facist or not.

So, why make the comment at all. Did you even see the irony of it, as pointed out by Melton.

--------------------------------

I wouldn't say "no idea" as i was basing it on strong rumours that have persisted for years and a memory from a few years back of it being proven he had membership to Forza Nuova. However, I would agree that I am definitely not 100% certain he is a fascist and, of course, if i was proved wrong I would unhesitatingly take my comment back.

As for the ironic situation, which may or may not be, the real irony of the whole situation was you agreeing with melton. You thought it ironic that i was accusing someone of fascism without really knowing, and then proceeded to assume my view of fascism was a particular type without knowing anything about me or my views. Oh the irony!

A facist by rumour.

Ok then.

I would definately like to know a lot about someone before I label them a facist.

But that is just me.

I'm sorry but if I was the admins, I would be seriously tempted to pull this thread completely. The conclusions being jumped to about de Rossi and then to label him an ultranationalist fascist (i do wonder if people on this thread think that is the only form of fascism, i seriously hope not) based on Internet conjecture, because that ultimately is all it is, is bordering on libellous for me and it has no place on a football forum.

Who even brought this up? Pathetic.

I have no idea whether Daniele de Rossi has fascist sympathies. From a brief search of the internet it seems there are only rumours.

Italian fascism as formulated by Mussolini was distinct from German Nazism, which was itself inspired by Mussolini, insofar as it had a stronger corporatist element (i.e. the idea of combining labour, business and the state) and it lacked the racial obsessions of Nazism. However, these ideological nuances didn't get in the way of the two regimes being firm allies and Mussolini collaborating in the project to cleanse Europe of Jews. More generally, let's not forget that fascism was an anti-democratic movement which had no qualms about imprisoning and murdering its political enemies and invading sovereign countries in its patriotic crusade to make Italy great.

It is true that neo-fascism in Italy is not identical to 1930s fascism. Modern day fascism has various strands with different levels of radicalism. However, the common denominator is ultra-nationalism and considering there is more to admire in Mussonlini's legacy than to be ashamed of. It is also the flag under which those who don't consider Balotelli a 'real Italian' march under.

So, like conormcgrace, if it did turn out De Rossi had such sympathies, I'd want nothing to do with him. This isn't irrelevant private matters of political views. This is about basic morality and whether we consider all human beings to be equal. We have to draw the line somewhere.

And VC, since you were piqued by the apparently unfair characterisation of fascism, I'd be curious to hear what elements of the ideology you deem to be the acceptable parts.

It will be easier to say what I do not acceopt.

That is any political view, that is in favour of persecuting race and religion.

Now, as far as I am aware de Rossi is in favour of neither. I could very well be wrong, as I don't know anything about his private life.

VC

I'm sure we don't agree about a lot of things in politics but that's a starting point we certainly can agree on.
