Downing

Tucked in at the bottom of the Guardian article on Suarez is a comment that we have held talks with West Ham over Downing.

Interesting. Downing's stock rose a bit last year after a fairly horrendous 2011/12. This is a strange one for me whereby I'm comfortable either way. I was impressed the way he battled back into the first 11 but I really don't see him as anything more than a squad player and if his departure and wages off the bill allow us to look at other options then I'm very happy for him to leave.

So, Downing - are we lovers or haters? And is there any substance to the Hammers link?

In fairness, TOOR always said Downing could provide goals for Carroll. Maybe TOOR is Karen Brady

That's a bit of a let down because I always would have slipped her the tip but that's put me right off!

Letting him go would only strengthen one of our rivals, because I can't see him moving abroad.

If West Ham end up as rivals next season then I'm going to be one hell of a disappointing year!

Actually maybe that's a good way of looking at it, if Downing did go where could you see him ending up? For West Ham or Fulham or Stoke seem about right. I can't see the likes of Spurs, Arsenal or Everton queuing up and maybe that should tell me something.

This is being reported by the BBC now, too.

Hopefully we can agree another decent fee with them. I think we did quite well from the Carroll deal.

Sterling is a hack defender who's first act is foul, and if that doesn't work then to foul again.

FFS all players defend at some point. It's just a question if you're any good at it and can hold up against better players. Downing can do that. The others not as well.

I would be ever gratefull for WH for taking Joe Cole, Carroll and Downing.

Its not that Downing is a bad player, he just never really attempts anything other than the very basic. Is never going to get me off my seat in excitement. In fact when he has the ball I just expect the move to fizzle out in a cross to noboby or a goal kick.

Did well to get back in the side, but mainly a passanger in my eyes.

guys he was one of the our most consistent passers was he not and he made the most? Not sure a winger should be doing this maybe it proves his lack of confidence to take on his man hes always passing backwards/sidewards successfully a lot? but someone said his passing was poor, its not!
