Since Arsenal last won a trophy 8 years 2 months and 22 days ago Arsene Wenger has been paid over £56m in wages.
In that time, Arsenal have spent £230m on new players, bought 50 players and sold 80, members of the 2005 squad (the last to win a trophy) have won 53 trophies elsewhere. Nicholas Anelka has scored 98 goals for 7 different clubs, got married & had 2 kids.. and he's won 6 trophies.
So why, exactly, is Arsene still considered a top manager? Surely this suggests that it was the players at his disposal, rather than the manager himself, who won those trophies; a bit like Mancini at City.
Other things that have happened since Arsenal last won a trophy:
Lionel Messi turned professional & won 78 individual trophies/awards, including 4 consecutive Ballon d'Ors.
29 English teams have won domestic trophies.
Juventus and man City have been relegated, promoted and won the league.
Liverpool have won 5 trophies.
Birmingham City have been relegated three times, promoted twice, and won a trophy (against Arsenal)...
390 people have been caught self-servicing in the street on Google Street View.
Every English club across every English league has changed manager.
Luis Suarez has been suspended for a total of 32 games... and still won 5 trophies.
Is Wenger past his sell by date?

Wenger works for the board.
Wenger has done what they wanted.
Remained top four and made them a shed loan of cash.
In that sense he's earned his money.
In terms of squad, could they have done better with what they've spent? No, not really.
He hasn't helped himself by buyin the likes of gervinho and such but his overly poor signings are actually pretty few and far between.
They just can't get top players for the fee/wages they spend. Top players win you things by and large.
I think under all te circumstances he's done aswell as can be expected.
Well never really know unless arsenal get purchased by a sugar daddy and he gets big money to spend.

Those three league titles looked, at the time, to be the start of a dynasty for Arsenal. They looked set to really be a rival to United where they would win trophies and dominate the English league. Then Chelsea got stuck in and United fought back, Arsenal just seemed to tread water and went from dominating to being a regular fourth place team.
What i'm saying is is that they have declined so much that those three league titles now look like a blip.
