Professional Performance

England have dropped to 17th in September's Fifa world rankings, their lowest position for 12 years.

Fantastic reward for many a 'professional performance' and indeed Hodgson's visionary tactics of by-passing a packed midfield.

Does anyone else remember the days when watching England with your mates in the pub was actually a fun thing to do? How about being optimistic about England's chances, my memory even goes back that far.

Roy Hodgson - a great big, flapping pair of clowns shoes.

Hmmmm You could do the easy thing and blame Roy... Or you could say we have always been an over optimistic, arrogant nation and that there are African teams that are miles ahead of us

Of the England managers who have been in charge for 10 or more competitive matches, only Taylor (42%) and Keegan (36%) have a lower win percentage than Hodgsons 50%.

Sven and Capello (68%), have the best competitive win ratios of all England managers.

Even Steve Mclaren, who at 12 matches managed for the same number of competitive games as Hodgson has to date, won an extra game. Mclaren's group was also much harder, containing two teams who reached the QF's and SF's of Euro 2008.

Can anyone see Ukraine, Poland or Montenegro making any impact at all next summer?

1man - the easy option isn't necessarily the wrong option.

The article was slightly in jest and I know it's not all Roy's fault - we simply don't have the players to be a top 5 team.

We do however have the players to considerably better than we are. Better than USA for example.

But we're not and the manager must shoulder much of the responsibility. You're a Liverpool fan, do you not remember the improvement in performance after Roy left? Same players, better football.

England aren't world beaters but they shouldn't be a poor also ran side.

over optimistic, arrogant nation

==============

Btw 1man, I'll admit to being over optimistic. Actually, I should correct that, I used to be over optimistic. But isn't that part of the fun of football?!

Arrogant? Sorry but not for most people I know. The people I watch football with know England aren't great.

I know I'm going to get shot down in flames for this, especially being a Liverpool fan; but I think we should get rid of Hodgson and try to persuade Alex Ferguson to take over for a couple of years.
I know it would never happen, he probably wouldn't want it, but he would certainly get the National side playing imo.

Fergie the proud Scot? I actually think there's more chance of him managing Liverpool and that's saying something!
