One of the most pleasant surprises of the summer was Kevin Doyle's decision to stay with Wolves. Probably our best player in the Premier League years and not someone that was badly tarnished in last seasons debacle. Now enjoying his football and doing an excellent job for Wolves. Good interview here with him while he was with the Irish squad this week.

That Irishman Doyle

He's never and probably won't be a consistent scorer for us, but at Reading he had 2 seasons where he scored 18 and another where he scored 13.
55 goals from 154 appearances, that's a goal every 2.8 games. I'd call that consistent.
The most he's scored for us is 9 in a season. 30 goals in 137 appearances. Only a goal every 4.5 matches.

I've said this before and I'll repeat it. I don't care who scores the goals for us, as football is a team game. So long as we look a better team with Doyle in it, then I'd continue to play him.
We do, so I would!

He definitely deserves his spot for sure.
I think what you just posted sums up perfectly why some question sako's place, so far we have looked a 'better team' when he has been out.

If he can score 9 goals for us this season Cyp, I'd be happy for him. The bigger test will come next year if we get promoted.
His contract is up along with others at the end of the season, so it'll be interesting to see what happens in the New Year and at what point he is offered a new one, if at all.

Will be a drastic reduction thats for sure if the 40 grand is to be believed.

Isn't the article a old one that's been rehashed and being cynical if it's true he's on 40k a week isn't that the reason he is still with us?
Although it is good to see the smile back on his face.

Honestly have no idea what he is on, 40 grand has been mentioned elsewhere previously.
At the time of our first relegation I felt it was a little naive to assume all players took a cut, and that looks to have been the case regarding a few.
IF he stays with us next season I can't see us giving him more than 15-20 grand a week.
I could see newly promoted sides possibly giving him more than that if he stays fit this season and impresses.

i think the £40k price is higher than he is really getting. to be honest, i suspect if he was on that high a wage we'd have moved him on by one means or another, especially as we did have bids in the summer. sako is on around £25k a week and we're likely to sell him.
wages aside, doyle's been a good servant to wolves and is one of only two or three definite prem quality players in the squad for me. it was his efforts that played the biggest part in keeping us in the prem in our first season, without which there'd have been no second and third. and although he got jaded playing the lone front man for so long, getting buffeted and battered every week with little service and less midfield support, he never complained and got on and did his job to the best of his ability.
such is the affection for dolye from most fans that he got a standing ovation on being subbed off every time he played in august, just in case it was the last game of his wolves career. and when he scored after making it clear he was staying, the whole crowd went mad not just for the result but as much because it was doyler and he deserved his goal. up there as an early contender for player of the season i hope he does get his double promotion. i fear we won't find next season easy tho, whichever league we are in, and right now his chances of representing wolves in the prem again are less than 50/50. every year is against him now as he's past 30. but at least he is playing with a smile again and enjoying his football, which has to be good for him and for us.

Wages are irrelevant once the player pulls-on the jersey and crosses the white line.
Doyle has been our most consistent player this season and he links the play very well. He is criticised for his lack of goals but by and large we struggled in the Prem so Doyle was played as a lone striker to allow us an extra player in midfield. When Doyle was holding the ball up front, running into corners so that the clock ran down etc... it meant that the opposition weren't attacking our goal. This unselfish work is often ignored when Doyle is criticised. Not once did Doyle moan or whinge. He just got on with it, sacrificing his own well-being for that of the team.
