Change of Formation

Not sure if this has been done recently but was listening to the radio last night and today after yesterdays game and the main topic of discussion was how we could fit Rooney, Kagawa and RVP into the one team. To me there is only one way this could work effectively and that would be a change of formation. For as long as I can remember we have gone with 4 at the back and then a variety of formations in front of this (although usually some variation on 4-4-2) however if we are looking to fit these three players in and also not get over run in the middle I think we will have to (and have the players to) go 5-3-2 (or 3-5-2 depending on how you view it) with Evra and Rafa playing as wing backs. I think the poor form of our wingers also makes it the perfect time to give this a go. You would end up with a line-up something like

DDG

Rio Evans Vidic

Rafa Evra
Carrick Jones

Kagawa

RVP Rooney

Kagawa would get to play in a central role and without the ball would drop deeper, he and rooney could interchange as well with RVP as the focal point. I think this looks creative and also compact without the ball and while it would perhaps be a risk, our current form overall and the form of our wingers especially means it could well be worth a go. What you guys think? (not sure how to set the formation on here to show Rafa and Evra as wingbacks but you get the jist)

It looks good on paper.

Not convinced Moyes has it in him to risk the change from a flat back 4 though.

Still leaves the highly talented and impressive Januzaj out of the side too.

Won't happen.

Takes a lot of effort and time to change a formation.

Are Rafa and Evra holding midfielders?

I hate the 3-4-3 formation.

When you are on the backfoot, you are basically playing a 5-4-1.... No way should UTD ever be playing that negative.

You have 4 CBs and a holding CM operating in similar areas.

Until we get a better midfield, to get the very best out of the team we have two choices;

1. Drop the wingers and play a narrow 4-3-3 with the creativity coming from kagawa, Rooney and the fullbacks.

2. Rotate Rooney and RVP and don't play them together.

Just as Nani and Valencia start playing better you want to drop them?
No more Januzaj either?

I like the idea of a 4-3-3 in which Kagawa is the most advanced of the midfield 3 and (assuming RVP is playing) Rooney plays slightly to the left of the centre forward. In fact, RVP and Rooney could easily interchange in those positions.
